Virginia “Ginnie” Chagnon

Virginia “Ginnie” Chagnon, born in 1932, passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on Thursday, May 19, 2022 at Cokesbury Village in Delaware with Bob, her loving husband of 50 years, by her side.

Ginnie was born in Richmond, Virginia, to the late Gordon and Charlotte Andrews. She was a graduate of Wilmington Friends School and the University of Delaware. In 1956, Ginnie married Robert L. Brooks, and they had three children together – Karri, Scott and Pam. Following Robert’s death in 1969, Ginnie married Bob Chagnon in 1972.

Together, Ginnie and Bob raised Karri, Scott and Pam. As a couple, they enjoyed traveling and bought a house on the Chesapeake Bay, known as the “Bay House,” where the extended family made some of their favorite memories together. Ginnie was a devoted grandmother of six, a great grandmother to three, and she and Bob enjoyed nothing more than spending time with family.
For 30 years, Ginnie was a kindergarten teacher, loved by her students and their families. In her classroom, she encouraged fun, learning, self-expression, emotional growth and friendship. After retirement, she spent time mentoring children through the CASA program, and she was especially proud of her role in helping twin girls find a family.

Ginnie and Bob eventually moved to Cokesbury Village, where they were blessed with an active life that included volunteering for the social committee, woodshop, white elephant sales, and much more. In addition, Ginnie enjoyed playing bridge with a variety of groups, and she was a member of the PEO sisterhood.

We would like to thank the many nurses, aides and hospice staff of Cokesbury Village for their kindness and loving care of Ginnie and for their continued support of our family. They have been a true blessing during a difficult time.

Ginnie is survived by her beloved husband Bob Chagnon; her three children, Karri Schnably, Scott Brooks (Beth) and Pam Remmey (Mark); six grandchildren, Cindy Rhoten (Jeremy), Sara Green (Ford), Carolyn, Melissa, Mark (Sarah) Remmey, Leah Brooks; and three great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Ginnie’s name can be made to the Cokesbury Village Samaritan Fund by clicking here.

Funeral Services

There will be a service to celebrate Ginnie’s life on Monday, May 23 at 3:00 pm in the Cokesbury auditorium, 726 Loveville Rd. Hockessin, DE. If arriving from off property, it is suggested to arrive a few minutes early for check in procedures.

I knew Ginnie when I was a CASA Coordinator (late 90's/early 00's) and she a volunteer. I remember Ginnie as a lovely lady, articulate, a pleasure to talk with, and very dedicated to those children for whom she advocated. It was always a pleasure to work with her. My sympathies to Ginnie's family and know that we all have another angel watching over us.
