Thomas Sowa

Thomas Sowa, age 95, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, peacefully, at home.

Thomas was born in Sandy Run, PA in June 1930, son of the late Sebastian and Mary Sowa. As a young child he and his nine siblings were given their faith foundation that Tom continued throughout his life. He married his sweetheart, Marie Klapinsky, in 1953 and moved to Newark, DE. Tom worked as an electrician at the Newark Chrysler plant, and then when Chrysler switched from making tanks to making cars, he joined the DuPont Company. He retired from DuPont in 1985, as an electrical design supervisor, and worked as an electrical consultant for many years, specializing in robotics and programmable controllers.

Tom loved his family and was proud of the accomplishments of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved spending time in the Poconos in the large cabin that he built. He taught his sons, nieces, and nephews to water ski and canoe. Before Covid, he was an active member of  the Newark Senior Center. He enjoyed square dancing, reading, playing Sudoku, and traveling. He and his wife, Marie, traveled to all 50 states.

Tom was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Marie, and by his nine siblings. He is survived by his two sons, Dr. David Sowa and his wife, Karen, and Donald Sowa and his wife, Kate; three grandchildren and their spouses, Alexandra Sowa and Peter McPartland, Victoria Sowa Gordon and Michael Gordon, and Matthew and Melanie Sowa; five great-grandsons Peter, Henry, and Brooks McPartland, Nicholas Gordon, and Johnny Sowa; and one great-granddaughter, Adele McPartland.

A visitation will be held at Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE, on Friday, January 30 from 4:30 to 6:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial, in celebration of Tom’s life, will be held on Saturday, January 31, at 11:00 AM at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Catholic Church, 10 Church Rd., Greenville, DE. Interment will follow at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Cemetery.
