Susan Y. Lee

Susan Y. Lee, 96, of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2026.

Born Shao Ying Chen in Beijing, China, Susan came to the United States in 1951 to pursue her education. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology from Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1955. Following graduation, she moved to Wilmington, Delaware, where she began her career at Wilmington General Hospital, which later became part of Christiana Care. In 1956, she joined the DuPont Company at Chambers Works in New Jersey, where she worked at the on-site hospital and medical laboratory.

In 1956, Susan married the love of her life, Peter Kung Hsing Lee. Together they shared nearly 70 years of marriage until Peter’s passing in 2025. A devoted wife and mother, Susan and Peter raised two sons, Dr. Raymond Lee and Robert Lee, a chemical engineer with the DuPont Company. She later became a proud grandmother to Raymond and Alexander Lee. Although she was predeceased by her son, Raymond, Susan cherished his memory and spoke of him often with love and pride.

Susan will be remembered as a talented artist and cook, particularly for her Chinese watercolor paintings and exceptional cuisine. Her Chinese watercolor paintings were exhibited at Wilmington’s Hotel Du Pont, reflecting both her artistic talent and deep appreciation for her Chinese heritage. Family gatherings and holidays were made special by her famous fried rice and chao mi fen, dishes eagerly anticipated by all who knew her. Above all, Susan will be remembered as a strong, loving, and steadfast protector of her family, whose devotion and care shaped generations.

She is survived by her son, Robert Lee, and his wife, Diane Lee; her grandsons, Raymond and Alexander Lee; and many loving nieces and nephews.
