Susan S. MacPherson

Susan Scheer MacPherson, a resident of the Kendal at Longwood community and previously of Deerhurst in Wilmington DE, passed away peacefully Friday June 7th, 2024 after a long illness. She was 76.

Susan graduated from Brandywine High School in 1965 and continued with undergraduate studies at Bucknell University where she was a member of the Tri-Delta Sorority and several Honors Societies, earning her Masters at the University of Virginia. Her passion for helping others prompted a long and fulfilling career as a guidance counselor at St. Elizabeth’s High School, where she mentored and supported countless students for over twenty years.

While a talented horseback rider in her younger years, parenthood was dedicated to her son Jamie and creating memories in foreign lands. Retirement afforded her time with her cherished corgi Gillie, for volunteering at Winterthur, and planning improvements with the Kendal Horticultural Committee. She had a love for local history and genealogy, art and travel, good people and new food. She was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Lydia Scheer and her beloved aunts, Martha Lloyd and Dorothy Lloyd.   Susan is survived by her devoted children, Jamie MacPherson and Emily Morrison-Hall, grandson George, and her cousins Richard Lloyd, Stephen Lloyd, and Janice Lloyd, and many friends who will miss her dearly.

The family is truly grateful for the many years of care Susan received from her oncologist, Dr. Marcia Brose, an internationally recognized leader in the field of thyroid cancer treatment and research.  The family also wants to thank the dedicated staff from Kendal at Longwood and from Willow Tree Hospice and the love of her many friends.

Services to honor and celebrate Susan’s life will be arranged by Chandler Funeral Home. Her family and friends will gather to remember a life well-lived and a woman who brought light and love to those around her.  A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Grace United Methodist Church, 900 Washington Street, Wilmington, DE 19801. A Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Interment will follow the service at the Wilmington and Brandywine Cemetery, Wilmington, DE.

Jamie and family, I’m so incredibly sorry for the passing of your mother. Susan was an elegant, kind and friendly neighbor for over 20 years. I was always impressed how she looked elegant all through her treatments and continued to walk her corgi’s. Deepest sympathy ❤️‍🩹, Patty

Susan was a devoted member to Grace UM Church. On the committee that she was a member she did all she was able as a faithful Christian to her Church. Susan always had an encouraging word even as she struggled with her health issues. I am thankful that I had the opportunity to know and work with her at Grace. May God comfort her family.

Dear Jaime and family, I am so sorry to hear of your mom‘s passing. I enjoyed working with her at Saint Elizabeth and meeting you, Jaime. Through your violin lessons to my daughter Rebecca, Susan and I learned that we were fifth cousins once removed! Not many people can say that! We would pass each other in the hall after that discovery and greet each other by saying, “ Hey Cuz .” Her leather bound family genealogy book is still a fascination to me. Condolences and prayers during this difficult time. Patti Root

Jamie and family-I did not hear of Susan’s passing until after her funeral today. I would have attended had I known. I met Susan working at St. Elizabeth High School where I found out we both lived in north Wilnington, not far from one another. Susan and I enjoyed many dinners and long conversations together as well as several Saturday trips to Chestertown, Maryland. Susan fought her cancer bravely for many years and I was impressed by her stamina and strength. She loved her corgis, most recently Gillie. Susan will truly be missed.
