Stephen Daniel Taylor, 75, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away peacefully at his home on October 16, 2026 after a long battle with cancer.
Steve was born in Wilmington in 1951 to William and Mildred Taylor. He spent his early years in the village of Arden, attending first the Arden School, followed by Sanford and Tower Hill. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Delaware in 1973 and went to work at Sanford School, where he taught History and English, coached baseball, basketball, and soccer, and served as Athletic Director. He left Sanford in 1977, and soon thereafter began working for the Delaware Supreme Court as special assistant to Chief Justice Daniel L. Herrmann. Steve spent nearly all of his career at the Supreme Court, where he met his wife, Lois. He rose to the position of Supreme Court Administrator, handling the non-legal aspects of court business, including adoption of technology, fielding of press inquiries, facilities, personnel and budget management, oversight of the Arms of Court, and the proctoring of the state bar exam. He retired from the Supreme Court in 2014.
Outside of work, Steve could be found coaching baseball, basketball, and soccer, reading history, or watching Philadelphia sports. He was especially involved in Brandywine Little League, for which he served as a coach, umpire, and divisional director. He fought cancer for the last three-and-a-half years, during which time he watched his Eagles win a second Championship, saw himself honored as the coach of Sanford’s 1975 Independent Conference-winning baseball team, and got to play with his grandsons.
Steve was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Bill. He is survived by his wife, Lois, of 47 years, daughter Jenny (Dan) and son Brian (Diane), two grandsons, Steve and Joey, and sister-in-law, Kathy.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, October 22, 2026 at Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803. A visitation will begin at 4:00 p.m., and the celebration will begin at 5:00 p.m. Interment will be private.
