Shirley S. Strouss

Shirley Singleton Strouss, age 91, of Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2026, at Christiana Hospital. Shirley was so blessed to have family and friends who loved her very much. She loved them all in return. She also loved animals; and her last pet was a sweet, loving cat named Lilah. She was born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1934 to Charles and Helen (Taylor) Singleton. She graduated from PS Dupont High School in 1952. She then worked for the Hercules Company as a secretary, for several years, in Wilmington, Delaware. She had a beautiful singing voice, and was very artistic: painting, sewing, doing ceramics, and crocheting beautiful blankets.

Shirley married the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Strouss on September 10,1955. They started dating during their junior year in high school. They were married for almost 66 years. Shirley moved, with her husband, Bob, when he joined the Army in 1958 as a Lieutenant; and was stationed in Kaiserslautern, Germany. Arriving back in the States, Bob joined Dupont as a Civil Engineer. They lived in Seaford, Delaware, Wilmington, North Carolina, and near Charleston, South Carolina. They then moved back to their home city, Wilmington, Delaware.

They had three children: Terri Mingoia (John), Keith (Tara), and David (Dolores). Shirley is predeceased by her beloved husband, Bob, and her beloved sister, Doris.

Shirley had seven grandchildren who will miss her dearly: John (Debbie), Bobby (Diana), Kat (Scott), Lisa (Ben), Jamie (Sarah), Whitney, and Patrick. She also had fourteen great grandchildren: Carina, Johnny, Adriana, Anthony, Evan, Nyah, Hareena, Katie, Safiya, Kaleigh, Asha, Theo, Lucy, and Nina. She also leaves behind her niece and nephews: Chuck (Donata), Michael (Greta), and Mary.

Shirley had a long, loving relationship with her church, the “Outreach of God’s Word”, and her pastor, Bob Mathieson, and his wife, Kathy. The three most important things to Shirley, were her loving God and his son, Jesus Christ, family, and her love for this country.

Shirley’s “Celebration of Life” will be held on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, with visitation from 4:00 pm until 5:00 pm. A service will begin at 5:00 pm at Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, Delaware.19803. Burial will be private.

Donations in Shirley Strouss’ memory can be made to Wounded Warriers at support.woundedwarriorproject.org or Rancho Relaxo at ranchorelaxonj.org (a nonprofit rescue in NJ).
