Sheila Marie Moore

Sheila Marie (Pack, O’Toole) Moore, 96, of Wilmington, DE, passed away, from natural causes, on March 14, 2024, at home with her son and caregiver Michael by her side.

Born  in 1928 in Detroit, MI, Sheila was the daughter of the late Joseph E. Pack and Martina Q. (Quinn) Pack.  She grew up in Pittsburgh, PA where her mother remarried the late James L. O’Toole, Jr., who then adopted Sheila.

After graduating from the Academy of Our Lady of Mercy, Sheila received a B.S. Chemistry cum laude degree from Marygrove College in Detroit, MI.  In June 1951, Sheila earned her M.S. Physical Chemistry degree from the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University).  Prior to attending the Carnegie Institute of Technology, she was a graduate student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for a year.

She worked at the Institute of Energy Conversion and in the College of Marine Studies, now the College of Earth, Ocean and Environment, at the University of Delaware.  She also worked at St. Mary Magdalen School, Dunkin’ Donuts, and Boscov’s.

She enjoyed listening to music and playing the piano.  Sheila loved the house in Wilmington.  She planted azaleas all around the house and enjoyed seeing them bloom each year.  While she was raising her eight children, she tiled the kitchen walls, removed wallpaper, painted rooms, sewed all of the curtains, and made lots of clothes for her daughters.  Sheila followed the Philadelphia Phillies and was glad to see them finally win a world series.  She baked many tasty cakes, cookies, and pies over the years, and often shared them with her older neighbors.

She was a member of the Church of the Holy Child Catholic Church, Wilmington, DE.

In addition to her parents, Sheila was preceded in death by her husband Carl G. Moore on March 26, 2017, with whom she shared 65 years of marriage.  They were married November 3, 1951 in Pittsburgh, PA.  She met her husband at the Carnegie Institute of Technology having asked him some questions after a graduate seminar he had given.

Her husband worked at DuPont, Wilmington, DE.  He also taught high school and community technical college, tutored students, and was a teaching assistant at the University of Delaware.

Sheila is survived by four sons, Carl G., Jr., North East, MD, Patrick J., Houston, TX, Michael A., Des Plaines, IL, and Terence J. (Paula J.), Olney, MD; four daughters, Martina L. Culik Moore (Jerome S.), Nottingham, PA., Maureen E. Radi (Mark L.), Savoy, IL, Regina M. Bator, (Robert J. Jr.), Wyomissing, PA, and Madeleine A. Faust (Daniel G.), Newmarket, NH.

Radi (Shane Spaulding), Christina L. Radi (Eric Peters), Katherine E. Lowe (Alex), and Elaina M. Faust; two great-grandsons, Charlie Pierpont Faust and Henry Pierpont Faust, and six nephews.  Her only niece preceded her in death.

Michael Moore & Family: I was saddened to hear of the passing of your Mom. I have worked with her for many years and knew her since I had worked with her Mom as well. She was a very smart cookie and accomplished many things in her lifetime. I enjoyed working with her all of those years and she will be missed. My condolences I know this is a hard time, and I will keep you in my prayers.
