Shawn Snyder

Shawn Snyder, 65 of Hockessin passed away at home surrounded by her family and close friend Debbie Coutu on Sunday, December 13, 2020.

Shawn grew up in the north Wilmington area. As a child, Shawn loved outings with her father Tom, going to the hardware store or other errands. Shawn’s professional career varied, but she was always in the customer relations or sales fields wherever she worked. Three years ago, she semi-retired, but worked part time at Continental Jewelers.

She was loved and respected by all of those she met professionally and socially. She was always friendly, inspiring, and engaging, but never desired to be the center of attention. A former co-worker described her as the epitome of class, grace, kindness, and beauty. Shawn was a beautiful person inside and out, and cared deeply for her friends, family, and pets. Shawn had volunteered for Read Aloud Delaware several years ago, the Police Athletic League of Delaware, and most recently the Delaware Humane Association.

Shawn enjoyed her frequent vacations to Key West and Phillies Spring Training in Clearwater Florida with her husband Stuart, as well as her exercise classes at the Hockessin Athletic Club. Her happy times were cut short with her cancer diagnosis last July. Shawn fought the disease, but it was too much to endure.

Shawn is survived by her husband of 33 years Stuart, daughter Heather Anson and her husband Ryan in Oklahoma, grandchildren Jake and Tyler Anson, her son Ryan Snyder and his wife Jamie of Wilmington, her mother Ann Baker of Bellefonte, brother Tom Baker (Nancy) of Pennsylvania, and brother Ted Baker of Wilmington. Shawn was pre-deceased by her father Tom Baker, and brother Rob Baker.

We wish to thank the care team at Penn Medicine Abramson Cancer Center, and the kind and professional staff of Dr. Corey Langer. We’d also like to thank the kind staff of Delaware Hospice for their efforts to comfort Shawn in her final weeks at home. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Shawn’s name to the Delaware Humane Association, 701 A Street, Wilmington, DE, 19801 or online at Delawarehumane.org.

My heart hurts for Stu and their family, and friends. Shawn was such a kind and fun person, with a sunshine smile. I still remember how she helped me in 1989, by giving me a job while I was waiting to start college. She knew that I was temporary and hired me anyway. Shawn was great to work for and with. Stu, I know how deeply she will be missed. Be good to yourself and allow your grief. Sending prayers to you and your family. Jann

Shawn and family I have always remembered you as a friend. Since the time we meet as kids, when we went to visit my Aunt and Uncle in Bellefonte and heard kids playing over the big cement wall in their back yard. We climbed the wall and found the Bakers. We all had a lot of fun and then you moved. Next time I saw you was at jr high and again we had a lot of fun together, from trips to Wilmington to shop at the boutiques, to a Rehoboth Beach trip and many other good times. Sincerest sympathy to all your family. Chris Gloyd Palmer

Patricia Baker-Ryan lit a candle and writes,
I just recently found out the sad news regarding Shawns passing, my sincere condolences and prayers are with Stuart and family as well as her mother and brothers. My memories of Shawn go back quite a few years ago - she was loving daughter, sister, sister-in-law and friend. I remember she never missed a day reading the news journal and she was so young when everyone else could care less. Shawn also had a pet named Chloe whom she adored a true animal lover. Anyone would know this by her dedicating her time to the humane society you can tell alot about a person and how they treat animals, compassionate. I remember her talking about this guy she called Stu she had just fallen head over heels for him, and next thing I knew they were married. Shawn also worked with my father at service merchandise he since then passed on as well in 2016. He just loved her and he was amazed just how she caught on so unbelievably fast. Shawn was always beautiful and will always remain that way I can tell by the photos I've seen she never aged. My heart goes out especially for Stuart 33 years is a long time and it appears you both shared a great loving happy life together, soulmates. Take comfort as I tell myself with the lose of my father until we meet again, and then trying to muster the strength in just living day to day missing their physical presence, however knowing spiritually you can just feel them all around you. And peace in knowing they would want you to carry on and be there for a part of them, of both of you that lives on your children and grandchildren. I pray God grant you peace, comfort and strength during this most difficult time.

    Stuart Snyder writes,
It's been a month since Shawn left us. She was the love of my life and a part of me is now gone. We were together for 34 years, and I'll forever treasure every minute we were together. From the first moment I saw her, I knew she was the one for me. Every time I heard "I've been waiting for a girl like you" by Foreigner, I would tell her that it was my song about her. I was single until I met her at age 33, waiting for the perfect person to be my wife. She hit the mark and then some. She touched so many people in so many ways, but all in a good way. She was always so thoughtful of others, friendly, engaging, but shy in her way as well. A truly beautiful woman in every way. Her disease caused her to suffer greatly in spite of our efforts to treat her with the best care possible. It was my mission as her care giver to comfort her and show her care and love to the best of my ability, until she drew her last breath while I was at her bedside. I relive that moment every day. I truly appreciate everyone's kind words of condolence, as well as their fond memories of her. We're planning a celebration of Shawn's life at Bellevue State Park on Friday, June 18th, 2021 at 4:30 PM. We reserved a pavilion at the park. Bellevue does charge a $4 per car admission fee that time of year. We'll have refreshments for those who want to come and celebrate Shawn's life with us. Stuart Snyder
