Richard Norman Dion

Richard Norman Dion, age 84, of Newark Delaware, loving husband and father, died on August 8, 2018 at home, surrounded by family.

Richard was born in Central Falls, RI, son of Wilbrod and Victoria Dion. While in high school he joined the Order of the Sacred Heart, attended St. Michael’s College, and Syracuse University, and then taught math and science throughout New England as a Brother in the Order. In 1969 he left the religious order and moved to Delaware to join the DuPont Company, working as an Information Specialist until his retirement in 1994. He then worked at Deerfield Golf and Tennis Club, as well as volunteered at Longwood Gardens and other places as a Master Gardener. More recently, he enjoyed working for the maintenance staff at Kennett Square Golf Club. Besides his love of golf, he also enjoyed cheering for Notre Dame, learning to play the piano, coaching his son’s soccer teams, camping and hiking, traveling throughout the US and Europe, and most important, seeing his children and grandchildren. Richard was a do-it-yourselfer, who loved gathering and splitting wood for his wood-burning stove, enjoyed tilling and planting a garden annually, and took pride in beautifying his yard.

Richard is survived by his wife, Linda K. Dion, his children Michelle Dion Mordan (William) of Wellesley MA, David Dion (Shelley) of Seattle, and Judy Dion (Benjamin Nicholson) of Wayland MA, his sister Lynn Adams (James) of Brooklyn CT, six grandchildren, and two nieces.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Saint Thomas More Oratory, 45 Lovett Avenue, Newark, DE 19711.

I extend to Dick's family my sympathy. I just saw the obituary in the News Journal and, because I have another time commitment for Monday 8/13, will be unable to attend the services at St. Mary of the Assumption. I knew Dick as a result of his employment at Deerfield Golf and Country Club. I played golf with him several times and thoroughly enjoyed that interaction. He once asked me if I wanted to go down to see the White Clay Creek and the abandoned, old DuPont Water Treatment plant next to the creek below hole #5. It was a rough ride in the golf cart to get there but his driving skill and determination got us there OK. And in those years Dick even came out to our home to prune some young trees and educate me on that subject. I also enjoyed talking to Dick about his work on his family tree. If my memory serves me, I think he said he had traced his ancestors back to the 1400's. Dick was a fine gentleman and obviously had a multitude of knowledge to share with others. With sympathy, Roger Wilson

My most sincere condolences to Linda and family. I had every intention of attending Dick's service but the best laid plans... got washed away in flooding. I'm so sorry for your loss! Every time I met Dick he was friendly and funny. A true gentleman. I know he leaves a hole in your life but many, many wonderful memories. All my best wishes.
