Ricardo Emerson Bezerra

Ricardo Emerson Bezerra, 73, passed away peacefully at home in Centreville, DE, on March 8, 2026. His life was rich with love of family, friends, and exciting experiences. With his eclectic taste in music and his love of cars, gardens, and history, he touched many lives.

He was predeceased by his father Joao Jonas Bezerra, his mother Maria Monteiro Horsey, and his stepfather Jack Horsey. Ricardo married Gayle Croes in 1986 after a 5-year courtship. They remained lovingly devoted to each other until he parted.

Ricardo’s career as a drummer spanned several decades, performing in studios and local clubs. His love of music and his drumming expertise took him to interesting places and led him to collaborate locally and nationally with other talented musicians. He enjoyed playing and listening to music from diverse genres.

Ricardo began working as an estate manager in Centreville in the 1980s. He took classes at Longwood Gardens to learn about horticulture. From this experience grew an appreciation for gardening and attention to detail on the estate where he worked caring for the house and gardens for 30 years.

Gayle and Ricardo both enjoyed a passion for preserving heirloom plants from family and friends, which literally grew into a special garden of their own to enjoy year-round. In their spare time when they weren’t perfecting their garden, they were tooling around together in their Alfa Romeo car, top-down, on the scenic back roads of the Brandywine Valley.

Ricardo often quoted a lyric from one of his favorite bands, “If the snakes don’t get you, swallowtails will.” After a lengthy illness, Ricardo finally succumbed to Lewy body dementia at home with Gayle and his sister Monica by his side. In addition to Gayle, he is survived by his brother Julio Bezerra, his sister Monica Weber (Don), his brother-in-law Bob Croes (Sue), his sister-in-law Deb Sagrera (Keith), and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A private gathering honoring his memory will be planned and announced later to close friends and family.

Donations in Ricardo’s memory can be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association or to the American Brain Foundation.

Services will be private.

I vividly remember meeting Ricardo back when I was in college and Monica was my roommate. He was charming, handsome, vibrant and I immediately had a crush! There was a magnetic, dynamic vibe around him and a presentness that I really thought was something special! He always seemed like something fantastic was happening or about to happen. I am so sorry to hear of his passing and can't even begin to imagine the battle he endured. It's hard to picture Ricardo ever slowing down. My heart goes out to Gayle and the family - the loss I'm sure is overwhelming. I know I feel lucky that I had the gift of meeting him and just being in his orbit even if only for a snapshot of time.

It’s hard to put 16 years of friendship into words. When we first moved to Centerville as newlyweds, Ricardo and Gayle opened their home and hearts to us with the kind of warmth you only dream of finding. We were truly lucky to have them as neighbors, as dear friends, and as role models for what a strong loving marriage should aspire to be. Ricardo and Gayle inspired us. Our favorite memories will always be those cozy evenings—starting with Gayle’s incredible cooking and ending with Ricardo sharing his passion for music, sometimes even treating us to a private drum concert. Those nights, filled with great whisky and even better conversations, are treasures we will hold onto forever. Ricardo was the definition of a gentleman and his big smile was sincere and contagious. Ricardo was like a father to us and a true friend who was passionate, kind, very wise, and always just one phone call away and ready to help you take on any problem or to celebrate one of life’s special moments or victories with you. He was the person who would cheer you up when you were sad or frustrated and also the person you wanted to share good news with because he would be genuinely happy for you. We will miss him dearly.

As a young drummer, just out of high school in ‘78 , I was lucky to join my first real original band in Delaware . We shared the bill at times with Ricardo’s band and I would sure to watch them from side, to get a front seat to Ricardo’s mighty pocket. He drove the band with his small Ludwig kit , always playing for song. Less is more, until more is more was needed. I learned so much watching this confident and seasoned player. Though he must have been only 26 or 27 himself. it was obvious that he had at this for a long while. A cool guy too. I left Delaware in the early 80’s but his play from the heart, play for the song is always part of me. Thank you , Ricardo. My condolences to Gayle and all his family and friends.

Knowing him and Gale for all these years was a lesson in kindness. Ricardo taught me to treat everyone with equal dignity, regardless of their position.
