Ramona N. Chakkaravarthi

Ramona N. Chakkaravarthi passed peacefully in the company of family, friends, and loved ones on May 25, 2026, at the age of 77.  She was the daughter of Dr. M. Natarajan and N. Janaki.   She was born in Chennai, India, and was the eldest of 5 siblings.

Ramona graduated at the top of her class from Madras Medical College and initially trained in orthopedic surgery before finding her love for internal medicine and geriatric care. While at Madras Medical College, she was part of a small group of women who paved the way for future female physicians in her school and in her country.  She went on to work at the Wilmington VA as an attending physician and also helped to train residents and medical students from Jefferson Medical College as an Associate Faculty Professor.   She loved working with and caring for elderly veterans and later headed the Compensation and Pension Department at the VA.

She loved her caring and faithful husband, Navajeevan, who passed away 2 years ago, her two children, Sumangala & Pritham, and her daughter-in-law, Dharshini.  Most of all, she cherished her two grandbabies, Arya and Anish, who always made her smile and melted her heart.

Ramona loved to cook Indian food for her family and friends. Her hearty chicken biriyani always satisfied the appetite and warmed the soul.  Guests were regularly welcomed into her house with love and delicious Indian cuisine and snacks.  She loved returning to her childhood home and visiting with her 4 siblings in Chennai, India, whenever possible.  Her favorite pastime was shopping for clothes and jewelry in the company of friends and family.

Ramona was a supportive and compassionate wife, mother, grandmother, and physician.  She was exceptionally resilient and dealt with numerous medical maladies for decades, and always felt grateful for the blessed life she was given.  Her devout spirituality aided in her overcoming both physical and emotional obstacles.

Ramona will be remembered as the strong-willed head of her household who used the adversities in her life to learn about the strengths, she didn’t know that she had, while dealing with fears that she didn’t know existed.

The Chakkaravarthi family would convey special gratitude to Dr. Bruce Hoffman, Dr. Hope Glavin, & Dr. Paul Marcotte for providing comprehensive and nurturing medical care that ensured a comfortable, long life for Ramona.  The Chakkaravarthi family would also like to thank our 2 wonderful aides (Mimi & Julia) and all of the wonderful staff at Complete Care Brackenville for taking such good care over the past 4 years.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2026 at 10:00 AM at the Chandler Funeral Home, 7230 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Arthritis Foundation.

Dear Akka. I love you. I will always remember your strict but love filled words of guidance you always had for me. When ever we 5 got together the DECIBEL LEVEL was beyond imagination. It was only because of you I married Chalini and I am ever great full to you. I recollect how all 5 of us will come to Daddy-Mummy’s room at 6 am , get on to the same bed they were and discuss all matters. When I was in the US you and Athan took so much individual care of me. You have at last gone to be with Athan and Suma. You know something. I still have Suma photo in my purse in her graduation dress you gave me. Before that I had her baby photo in my purse. She was my lucky girl for all my exams. Even now whenever we start a new project I always takeout her photo , keep it among Gods photos and wish myself ALL THE BEST KANNA MAMA. I will miss you Akka. LOVE YOU. 🌺 MADHI

It was truly a privilege to care for Mrs. Chakkaravarthi over the years. She was always kind, gracious, and appreciative, no matter the challenges she faced. Her gentle spirit and warm smile made a lasting impression on everyone who had the opportunity to know her. What stood out just as much as her kindness was the love and devotion of her family. The compassion, respect, and unwavering support they showed throughout her journey were a beautiful reflection of the life she lived and the values she instilled in those around her. I am grateful to have known her and to have been entrusted with her care. She will be remembered fondly and deeply missed. My heartfelt condolences to her family and all who loved her.

Our heartfelt condolences and prayers go out to Dr. Romona’s family, loved ones, and friends. Dr. Romona was a devoted volunteer who faithfully visited the Mahalakshmi Temple every Thursday to serve with the flower garland team, lovingly creating beautiful garlands for all the temple deities. She was also a long-time supporter of the Ayyappa and Murugan Sannidhis. Her unwavering dedication, kindness, humility, and spirit of selfless service touched the lives of many and greatly enriched our temple community. Through her devotion and service, she leaves behind a legacy of faith, compassion, and generosity that will be remembered with gratitude and affection. We pray to Lord Ayyappa to bless her noble soul with eternal peace and to grant strength, courage, and comfort to her family, friends, and all who mourn her loss during this difficult time. It has been an honor to be connected to the Chakkaravarthi family for over three decades. Dr. Ramona Chakkaravarthi leaves a breathtaking legacy both as a physician and as a matriarch. Her strength, spirituality, and love are so clearly reflected in her son, Pritham, who has been a brother to me since 1993. I will forever admire the love and care Pritham dedicated to his parents over the years. My family's hearts are with Pritham, Dharshini, Arya, and Anish. She is finally at peace and reunited with her beloved Navajeevan. God Bless and Om Shanti.

Buyan Thyagarajan lit a candle and writes,
We (Buyan Family) are extremely grateful for Dr. Amma's presence in our lives. She was the guardian angel for our family, always cheering us in our dark times, providing us comfort, guidance, and help throughout our life as we went through our early life as immigrants with young kids. Her booming voice on "Ellam Seriya pogum" , smiling face, and strong will to fight through tough times were an incredible inspiration for us. We called her Amma as she was the Patty for our kids, with Dr.Appa being the thatha for our young kids in the USA. I will always remember her for her humility despite her large family background in India, her constant words of encouragement, and her positive guidance whenever we go to her house. She will always have food , loves spicy food, and shopping. She was a mentor, mom to my wife Indu, and always sent encouragement in texts, phone calls, and face-to-face interactions. We will miss you, Amma, a lot. But we are indebted to you and extremely grateful to you and Dr. Appa for spending time with us and in our lives. My deepest condolences to Pritham and family, and I hope you have time to recover from this huge loss!!

Dear Pritam, Please accept our heartfelt condolences. May God give you and your family the strength to bear this irreplaceable loss. We have very fond memories of both your mother and father. When we first moved to Hockessin in the early 1990s, I played tennis with your father regularly, both indoors and outdoors, throughout the year. He was very competitive and always fun to play with. We were also deeply appreciative of your parents’ invitations to their home for poojas and the sumptuous meals that followed. We miss them both and will always cherish those memories. With deepest sympathy, Kamatchi and Sakthi Vel
