Paul LeGrand Johnstone, Jr. “Leigh”

Paul LeGrand Johnstone, Jr., “Leigh”, passed away peacefully at his home in February of 2021 at the age of 79. Leigh was born in Wilmington, Delaware in May of 1941. He was the son of Virginia and Paul Johnstone. He attended Tower Hill School and graduated from Westminster School in Simsbury, Connecticut. Following his graduation from the University of Delaware, Leigh entered the United States Army. He was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and served two tours in Vietnam where he was promoted to the rank of Captain and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Army Commendation Medal.

Returning from the service, Leigh began a long and rewarding career in Commercial Real Estate in Delaware, working with Patterson Schwartz, CB Richard Ellis, and Grubb and Ellis. At the time of his death he was Chairman and CEO of his own firm, Johnstone and Associates.

Leigh was the founder and first Chairman of the Commercial Industrial Realty Council of Delaware and was appointed Chairman of the Wilmington Economic Development Committee. He served on the State’s Economic Advisory Council.

Leigh also served on the Board of Directors of the Addiction Coalition, Easter Seals, Make-A-Wish-Foundation and the Delaware Academy of Medicine.
Leigh had many interests that he pursued with passion. Leigh volunteered as a tutor and mentor to young students and was recognized by the State of Delaware and Business Mentoring Council for his personal mentoring of boys at the Ferris School.

He was a member of the Wilmington Country Club for 74 years and the Wilmington Rotary Club for 28 years. As a member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 40 years, he provided counseling and support to help hundreds of people maintain sobriety.

Leigh, aka “Travis McDivot,” loved to play golf, and continually amazed and impressed his friends with his skill. He won three Super Senior Championships and “shot his age” on numerous occasions. Playing what was to be his last round, undeterred by the 34 degree weather, Leigh teed it up with a friend on January 30th, the last day before the course was covered with snow, and shot a 77 – two shots below his age. Leigh was also renowned for his exceptional skill at backgammon and won many tournaments.

His love for nature, in particular his fascination with songbirds, led him to establish the Bluebird Committee at Wilmington Country Club, earning him the nickname “Birdman”. With his leadership, the club installed forty bluebird houses and five purple martin houses and earned the prestigious designation of Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.

Leigh never retired. He was passionately engaged in his business, his volunteer pursuits, and his academic interests in Political Science and Contemporary Issues through the Academy of Lifelong Learning.

Leigh’s upbeat attitude and positivity will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Leigh was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and brother-in-law. He was predeceased by his parents, his nephew Colt duPont, and his stepdaughter, Robin Carper. He is survived by his loving wife Kitty (Wheelock), his sisters Caroline Prickett and Diana Lopez (John), his daughter Lainie Giovale (Mike), his son David George (Wendy), his step – daughters Kim Ramsey (Jeff) and Jenny Sleeper (Mark), four nieces and nephews, and nine grandchildren.

Leigh’s family hopes you will remember the joy and laughter Leigh brought into so many people’s lives with the quote he included at the end of every one of his e-mail messages: “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass … it’s about learning to dance in the rain!”

Funeral Services

Burial will be private at the Lower Brandywine Presbyterian Cemetery. The family is hoping to hold a celebration of Leigh’s life with his family and many friends when COVID restrictions ease.

To honor Leigh’s memory, the family suggests contributions to the Nativity Preparatory School, 1515 Linden Street, Wilmington Delaware, 19805, or the Wilmington Rotary Club Scholarship Fund, Box 685, Wilmington, Delaware, 19801.

    John Schoonover writes,
When our favorite lunch place, the Moveable Feast closed over a year ago, I didn't just miss the selection of soups and 1/2 tuna on rye, I longed for the conviviality of friends like Leigh whom I encountered almost daily. Leigh was actually in my sister's Class at Tower Hill, and although I did not know him well, we always shared different interests as we lunched and acknowledged other friendly faces entering the door. His favorite trick, if you call it that, was buying me my usual dessert, a brownie, then halving it with his credit card, smiling the whole time. Fine fellow, wonderful sense of humor, lived a good life. Certainly will miss him. My condolences to Kitty ( another Moveable patron and the Johnstone family. Best Regards, John

    Louise (Fibbie) Schoonover Smith writes,
    By the time I came to Tower Hill, Leigh was off to Westminster School. However, he often joined our class of '59 for reunions and activities and usually was the center of the laughter and story telling. I appreciated that he was kind to me, the 'new' classmate from 'below the canal'. He will be missed in Wilmington, in Delaware, and by all who knew him. So glad to hear that after CoVid, his amazing life will be celebrated. Our best thoughts and sympathy go to Kitty and the family. Fibbie {Schoonover Smith}

I had the privilege of getting to know Leigh for the last 20 years. What a great guy! He did some sales for our company on the side and everyone enjoyed having him around the office. He was a blast at company Christmas parties. December 2020 being no exception. He was the life of the party. I loved listening to the many stories of his exploits over the years. I'm going to miss him. Prayers for Kitty and the rest of Leigh's extended family.

Leigh was a refreshing oasis of genuine friendliness, humor and civility in a tough business. His often philosophical view of life prompted me to call him our Poet-Broker which always elicited his famous chuckle. Thank you Leigh for teaching us how to dance in the rain! Jim.

To the family of Leigh Johnstone, I got to know Leigh during the Frawley for Mayor campaign in 1984 and we remained friends ever since. I should say one of his many, many too numerous to mention friends. He was a good man, always with a hearty greeting, never a negative word. Leigh was dedicated to making the world better for those less fortunate, and had more interests than I knew before reading this obituary. He will be missed. Please accept my condolences, my thoughts and prayers are with Leigh and his family. Rich Heffron

Leigh was one of the best persons I have ever met in the real estate world. A true gentleman. He always greeted me with a smile . He was a mentor to me as a young 29 year old attorney. The first real estate deal I ever did was with Leigh. Showed me more respect than I deserved. As years past he always shook my hand with that great smile he had and was always a great listener. Always was concern with me and my family. Our profession lost one of the great ones. My deepest sympathy to his family. I know Leigh is in heaven telling one of his great stories. God Bless, Chris Locke

    Dana N. Nasuti writes,
I've forgotten how I met Leigh in the mid-1980s, but I was the public relations consultant for Caldwell Banker Commercial in Philadelphia at the time. The director of that office was Robert Walters and he asked me to interview Leigh as a potential candidate to open a Wilmington office for the firm. I was immediate captured by Leigh's class and professionalism. Leigh was also considering joining Cushman and Wakefield, a firm for which I also worked in 1971-72 in Manhattan. I suggested Leigh go with CB as I believed he was a better fit for the organization than he was for Cushman & Wakefield. Leigh took that advice and became a valued member of the CB Wilmington office and in the process a good friend who never forgot me, sending me a Christmas Card every year. That thoughtful action was indicative of Leigh's concern for those who may have helped him in his professional career. It has been said it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them and a lifetime to forget them. Leigh Johnstone was such a person in my life and I shall be forever thankful to God for being able to call him my friend.
