Michael S. “Mike” Purzycki

Michael S. Purzycki, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, mentor, and public servant passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at the age of 80, following a hard-fought battle with cancer. He was surrounded by the family he loved most.

To Wilmington, Mike was a transformational mayor and the driving force behind the rebirth of the Christina Riverfront. To his family and friends, he was simply “Mike” — steady, generous, endlessly encouraging, and someone who saw possibility in every person he met.

Mike was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1945 and grew up in the Vailsburg section of the city alongside his younger brother and lifelong best friend, Joe Purzycki. Before Delaware became his lifelong home, he spent many summers as a young man in Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey.

At seventeen, Mike arrived in Delaware on a football scholarship to the University of Delaware, a decision that would shape the rest of his life. A standout wide receiver for the Fightin’ Blue Hens, he set receiving records during his era and later signed a free-agent contract with the New York Giants for the 1967–1968 season. After a knee injury ended his professional football career, Mike returned to Delaware, where he built a life rooted in family, public service, and community.

While living in Newark, Delaware, Mike met the love of his life, Bette Richitelli Purzycki. Together they built a life of centered on family, raising two children in Newark before welcoming their third child later in Wilmington, Delaware. Through every chapter of Mike’s public life, Bette remained his closest partner, greatest supporter, and home.

Mike graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in history and later earned his law degree from Delaware Law School while working in real estate during the day. After being admitted to the Delaware Bar, he served as attorney to the Delaware State Senate and practiced real estate law for more than a decade.

In 1982, Mike was elected to New Castle County Council, where he chaired the Finance Committee for nine years and authored the legislation that became Delaware’s first ethics law. But his greatest public legacy began in 1996, when he was tapped to lead the Riverfront Development Corporation.

Where others saw abandoned shipyards and industrial waste along the Christina River, Mike saw opportunity. Over two decades, he helped transform the Wilmington Riverfront into one of the Mid-Atlantic’s most successful urban revitalization projects, bringing billions in public and private investment, miles of Riverwalk, restaurants, hotels, housing, wildlife preservation, and family destinations to the city he loved.

In 2016, Mike returned to elected office and was sworn in as Wilmington’s 56th mayor in January 2017. He was re-elected in 2020 and spent his years in office focused on neighborhoods, housing, public safety, and creating opportunities across every part of Wilmington. He often spoke about wanting Wilmington to become a “just city,” where every resident had the chance to thrive.

Yet for all of his accomplishments, titles, and recognition, Mike’s favorite role was being with his family. His happiest moments were spent at the family’s river house, surrounded by children, grandchildren, relatives, and friends. He loved telling stories, encouraging young people, cheering others on, and making everyone around him feel seen and valued.

Mike had a rare gift for believing in people before they believed in themselves. He spent his life helping others recognize their own potential, quietly mentoring countless people whose lives were changed by his confidence, advice, and friendship. More than any building, project, or office, that faith in people is the legacy he leaves behind.

Mike is survived by his wife, Bette Richitelli Purzycki; his brother, Joe Purzycki (Sharon); his children, Mick (Ally), Adriane (Andrew), & Gage; and five grandchildren, Pascal, Yoyo, Mayor, Maggie, & Locke.

    Jack Varsalona writes,
I first met Mike in 1966 at the University of Delaware, where he was Captain of the football team and President of every other organization he was involved in. I watched and learned about leadership and involvement from him. Whenever there was a need, he was there to lead. When there was injustice, he stepped in. When someone needed help, you could count on Mike. I was lucky to know the entire Purzycki family where I continued to learn about leadership and compassion. We will all miss Mike and his way of fixing the wrongs among us. Fortunately, he is survived by his brother Joe who leads and cares with the same intensity. I will miss Mike dearly. Jack Varsalona

His dedication to the City of Wilmington was undeniable and as a resident of the City since 1988 when I relocated to DE, I am so proud to have voted for Mike and to be able to call this good and faithful servant my friend. Sending so much love to Bette and Joe and the entire Purzycki family at this sad time. R.I.P. Mike. You are loved and missed.

    Thomas D. Whittington writes,
My condolences to Mike’s family and friends. I knew Mike for over 60 years ago. Like many of his friends I had a private relationship with him where we would help each other from time to time. Our friend Norman Neide and I facilitated one of his first real estate projects. As Mike and I both focused on areas of real estate development, our relationship grew from there. When he was deciding on law school, he asked “Should he really consider a school where they had allowed me to teach?” My mischievous response was only if he thought that he could pass the Delaware Bar. Years later our teasing continued with my response of “Are you out of your mind?” when he told me he was thinking of running for Mayor of Wilmington. This became a running joke as I helped with his campaign and he would note, “Whittington, maybe you were right for once.” With Mike’s passing the world will be a less fair and welcoming place. We will all miss him.

I work for NCC. While I did not know Mayor Purzycki well, I enjoyed friendly chats and laughs with him when taking the elevator. This may sound like a small thing-- but his warm, friendly manner touched me. Now that I have learned about his life and legacy, I am not surprised by my positive experience of him. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

    Louis B. Rosenberg writes,
TO: Chandler Funeral Home & Crematory.com Condolences – Lou Rosenberg Writes: In 1985, as the President of Mitchell Associates, Inc., along with Moeckel Carbonell Associates, we purchased the property on Thorn Street – an old abandoned machine shop and warehouse which was established in the nineteenth century in Wilmington, Delaware. We later renamed Thorn Street as One Avenue of the Arts, located between the Christina River and Water Street. The following year, we brought The Delaware Theatre Company along as our neighbor on the adjacent property. Delle Donne & Associates was our developer. The Theatre Company was forced to relocate their existing location on French Street to allow the City of Wilmington to create the Christina Gateway to accommodate the incoming banks as a result of the newly created financial development act. We were alone in the building for many years, and when Mayor Dan Frawley referred to us as “Pioneers”, I corrected him and reminded him that we were the “Scouts”. Everything changed for us in 1996 when Governor Tom Carper asked Mike Purzycki to lead the newly formed Riverfront Development Corporation. I met Mike shortly thereafter; we admired his dreams and aspirations to transform the abandoned shipyards and industrial waste along the Christina River into what it is today. We were all in! What is now the Chase Center on the Riverfront was then a building which was called Pettinaro Park. Pettinaro was a great neighbor who also developed the Shipyard Shoppes and Frawley Stadium. Who could forget the amazing Nicholas & Alexandra Exhibition that the RDC put on as the first show there! Then along came Kahunaville with fantastic shows on barges on the Christina River. The Riverwalk, followed by Juniper Bank, which became First USA then Barclays, Harry’s Seafood Grill (now Bank’s Seafood Kitchen and Raw Bar) the Riverfront Market, ING Direct, Dravo Plaza, the River Taxi, the Hyatt, the Weston, Big Fish Restaurant, Backstage Café, Joe’s Crab Shack, Iron Hill Brewery, the Delaware Children’s Museum, the Hare Pavilion, Mini Golf, the Russell W. Peterson Wildlife Refuge, and the list goes on. As a former and current Member of the Board of Directors of the Delaware Contemporary (formally the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts), I would like to personally thank Mike as well as Mike Hare and Megan McGlinchey and their amazing team for their leadership and foresight in helping to bring us to the Riverfront. Without their knowledge and assistance for more than the past twenty-five years, the organization, the community and the artists we serve would not be in our wonderful building on the Riverfront. I thank you, Mike Purzycki, as my friend, my mentor and my client – and may you rest in peace – love you. Lou Rosenberg
