Mary M. Hunter

Mary M. Hunter, age 90, of Greenville, DE passed away peacefully on June 6, 2024.  Mary was the daughter of James and Marion (Gillespie) Moore and grew up in Cherry Hill, Maryland.  She attended Elkton High School and graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in education.

Mary met the love of her life, James Hunter of Claymont, DE, on a tennis court here in Wilmington.  After their marriage they moved to Schenectady, NY where they had two daughters.  Not long after, they move to Hurley, NY and later to Wilmington, DE, then to Wilmington, NC, and ultimately back to Delaware.

Jim and Mary loved to travel and explored many countries.  She loved spending time with her family, their annual trips to Sebago Lake, Maine and the many lifelong friends they met over the years.

Mary was passionate about teaching adults to read, and volunteered as a tutor through Reading Assist for many years.  She enjoyed volunteering in the book room of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), reading, quilting, playing bridge, and long walks with family and the Wilmington Trail Club.

Mary was pre-deceased by her loving husband, with whom she shared 62 wonderful years of marriage, her parents, and her sister Nancy.  She is survived by daughters Kathryn Christensen (Gregg), and Deborah Wersinger, granddaughter Jordan Wersinger, great granddaughter Jayda Wersinger, her brother James Moore and 12 nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Country House and all their employees for the love and care they provided over the years.  Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Reading Assist, 100 W 10th Street, Wilmington, DE 19801, or to a favorite charity.

Mary and Jim lived in my neighborhood of Greenview for many years. They were a lovely couple. I especially remember Jim playing his bagpipes in the woods behind his house and Mary playing bridge with the ladies. I am so sorry for your loss. I have many fond memories of both Mary and Jim.
