Marilyn Tonjes Flaherty

Marilyn Tonjes Flaherty passed away Monday November 12, 2018.

She was born in Brooklyn in September 1924, the daughter of Eleanor K. and George M. Tonjes. She grew up in Tarrytown, New York and married John J. Foley, Jr. as a war bride. She married Richard C. Moses in 1965. After his death, she married John E. Flaherty of Greenville, Delaware, where she resided until her death.

Mrs. Flaherty was a pioneer in telephone marketing and informational programs. She founded “Productions-by-Phone” the parent company of “Dial Your Stars”, horoscopes by phone in 1969.

She was a member of the Yale Club of New York City. As a tireless and enthusiastically supportive member of that community, she was made an honorary member of the Wiffenpoofs of the Class of 1951.

Mrs. Flaherty was a member of the Wilmington Country Club and of Vicmead Hunt Club. She was an energetic, inspiring member of the Stonegates retirements community organizing talent shows and other entertainment. Among her many friends at Stonegates was her confidant and soul mate, Stew Hoagland.

Mrs. Flaherty was predeceased by her brother, George R. Tonjes and her son, John J. Foley, III. She is survived by her daughter, Suzanne Strawbridge of Hobe Sound, Florida; two grandchildren, Welsh Strawbridge of Washington, DC and Samantha Eddy of Wilson, Wyoming; four Moses step-children; and six Flaherty step-children.

Marilyn Flaherty wished to express her deep gratitude to the wonderful nurses at the Stonegates Health Care and to her “angel” Pam McGill.
