Louis “Tex” “Plups” Jackson died peacefully at home in Wilmington DE on Friday, May 27. He was 93 years young. The patience, willingness, and kindness Plups extended without exception will be sorely missed, as will his theories, musings, and wit on a wide range of topics. Plups was a wise and gentle man with an easy smile.
Lou was born in 1929 in Dallas TX to Ethyl (Burks) and Bayard Jackson. He moved to Wilmington DE at the age of ten. Tex was a 1947 graduate of Henry S. Conrad High School, and in later years he organized the class reunions up to and including the 50th.
Lou began his career with Diamond State Telephone in 1948. In 1950, Lou entered the US Army and was honorably discharged in Dec 1952. That New Year’s Day he was introduced to the lovely Thelma Huber by their mutual friend, Bob Stack. Lou and Thelma married on June 5, 1954 and began 68 loving years of marriage.
Lou continued his career with Diamond State Telephone as an electronics technician. Lou was a dedicated Mason of Oriental Lodge #27 and a member of St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church. Lou was an avid golfer in his earlier years and achieved a 205 yd hole-in-one on Aug 4, 1966.
Lou retired in 1990 from AT&T after 42 years of dedicated service. He remained active in retirement as a member of the Telephone Pioneers, providing Talking Books for those visually impaired. In addition, Lou used his electronic talents to provide audio during services at St. Stephen’s and delivered altar flowers to housebound parishioners.
Lou was predeceased by his parents and his older brother, Eddy.
Lou is survived by his devoted wife, Thelma, his adoring daughter and son-in-law Jill and Paul Amer (Moultonborough, NH) and three cherished grandchildren Sarah (Brookline, MA), Sam (Hoboken, NJ), and Libby (Jamaica Plain, MA). Additionally, Lou is survived by his sister Ann Humphreys (DeLand, FL), sister-in-law Joan Huber (Wilmington), brother-in-law Charles Huber Jr and wife Lyn (Wilmington), and numerous and dear nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
We are deeply indebted to family friends Jack and Audrey McCullough and their children, Clare Pienkowski, Fran Dickerson, and Stephanie Harris for their love and support. The family truly appreciates Delaware Hospice for their exceptional care and compassion.
A Celebration of Life is planned for later this summer.
In ‘Lou’ of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 (www.stjude.org) or Delaware Hospice where memorial gifts can be made online (www.delawarehospice.org), over the phone, or by mail.
