    Christine Chastain-Warheit writes,
Dr. Whitney was “old school”: a classic, a gentleman, a good boss as well as a caring compassionate physician. As head of Medical Affairs and Medical Education at Christiana Care, formerly the Medical Center of Delaware, he was my boss as library director. He was a true fan and supporter of medical libraries and residency education. He wasn’t personally “high tech” but he was “high touch” and deeply endorsed technology in medical education. He was supremely devoted to his wife, Joan, smiling with twinkling eyes whenever he spoke of her. It was obvious he adored his family. He will be greatly missed.

Louise Carbaugh lit a candle and writes,
Dr. Whitney was a wonderful compassionate physician. He always took the extra time to meet the needs of his patients. I remember in 1980 when he sat at my bedside in the hospital on a Saturday night and watched the Olympics with me. I was scared about my condition but he took the time to sit and comfort me in my time of need! He followed me medically throughout the years and I truly missed his presence when he retired. May he Rest In Peace.

    Dick Broadbent writes,
In 1951, I was in 7th grade and suffered a trauma where my right hand & arm was mutilated at Krebs school by a glass door that blew shut as I tried to stop it. All my nerves, arteries & tendons were severed. I was rushed to Wilmington General hospital. My Mom was in shock and a Doctor came up and said to her "Mrs. Broadbent I can do it." That Doctor was Dr. Leslie Whitney. After 4 hours of intensive surgery, he performed a miracle and reconstructed everything. Years later whenever he saw me, he'd say, "Let me see that hand". He was proud of this surgery. He said my arm would have been cut off, if not for the bone. I went on to play sports at a high level and have Dr. Whitney to thank for my ability of catching a football, and pitching, and not being disabled. We had a special bond. May God always be with him!

You do not remember, we worked together @ MCD to start First State Health Plan. In the times I questioned myself, you reminded me that not all physicians (for which I am one) practice medicine.
