Laurence Scott Anderson

Laurence Scott Anderson, Delaware’s Painter of Memories passed away peacefully at home surrounded by love on November 21, 2021.

Originally from Illinois, Larry’s career as an electrical engineer brought him to Delaware in 1984. He was a graduate of the American Academy of the Arts in Chicago where he studied commercial illustration and water color. Both his parents were artists as well as his brother, Jon. After settling in Delaware, he decided his talents lay elsewhere and spent the next 30 years as a full- time artist. Always a champion for charities, Larry served on the Board of Directors of Ronald McDonald House of Delaware, Wilmington and Western Railroad, United Cerebral Palsy and Delaware Foundation for the Visual Arts. He was the founder of Artfest at Ronald McDonald House and the Hockessin Art Show. He is well known for paintings of the Rockford Tower, the Wilmington skyline, Walkers Mill, the Deer Park Tavern, Longwood Gardens and Delaware beach bars such as the Rusty Rudder and the Starboard. Many local high schools and churches are memorialized in his paintings. He expanded his horizons beyond the Delaware Valley to paint the White House, the Lincoln Memorial, the Statue of Liberty, the 1964 World’s Fair in New York and several scenes of Annapolis. Larry’s paintings have touched the lives of many people. He was happiest when he knew one of his paintings was part of someone’s memories, past or present. Larry had a loyal following and his originals and prints hang in many a home and office in the Delaware Valley and beyond. www.larryanderson.com is a pathway to all the art which brought joy to so many. He was predeceased by his parents, Bette and William Anderson of Illinois and his sister-in-law, Sandra Jean Cooper. He is survived by his husband, David Cooper, of Wilmington, his brother, Jon Anderson who resides in Bali, his brother-in-law, Phillip Cooper, his nieces Lori Cooper and Leslie Cooper, his grandniece, Grace Chariya, grandnephew, Cooper Acton, all of Central Illinois as well as numerous friends he made along the way.

Funeral Services

A Memorial Service to honor his life will be held on Saturday, December 4, 2021 , at 10am at Red Clay Presbyterian Church, 500 McKennan’s Church Road, Wilmington DE 19808. In accordance with Covid guidelines masks are required.

Larry was a dear friend, teacher and my mentor. He was a very talented artist and a very giving soul. He gave much to the art community in the Delaware area and to its artists. He will live on in all the beautiful artwork he has created. We artists from the Hockessin Show have always referred to our group as "our artist family", and I feel that Larry was the "father" of this family of artists. He will be so greatly missed.

I knew Larry as the founder of the Hockessin Art Show. I had the privilege of being an artist there for several years. For countless years, Larry Anderson was an integral contributor to the growth of Creative Impression art galleries in both Rehoboth Beach and Annapolis, Maryland. Many of his wonderful limited edition prints became sold out editions. We would often joke that his minis series started one day over lunch on a napkin while chatting. We literally sold thousands of his renditions of Annapolis’ City Dock and Rehoboth Ave, Rehoboth. Larry was always a pleasure to work with and offered so much enthusiasm in his painting. I am so sad for the loss of my dear friend, Larry Anderson. I am probably the only person that could actually say that I had known Larry all his life. He and I were childhood friends and our mothers were pregnant with us at the same time. Our families would spend many Thanksgivings together and at those great occasions we would spend most of the meal giggling with each other. I absolutely loved his sense of humor. Dear David I don't know if you remember me & my Joseph we meet you and Larry on Titanic expedition 1996 ..along with Rosemary and Marianne...Roe actually told me of Larry's passing... I still treasure the print of the painting of the grand staircase that Larry did that he personalized and signed to me along with the signatures of the Titanic survivors Edith and Michel ..it hangs in my home office...we remember Larry as being such a nice and personable person! We met Larry quite a long time ago and have the privilege of enjoying many if his original art everyday. Each piece has a story of how we chose it and how we learned all the work Larry did, in researching each site, before he even lifted a brush. He was an amazing person and artist.
