Judith Chynoweth passed away peacefully at Country House in Greenville, Delaware, after living with dementia and recently entering hospice care.
Known as “Judy,” she was born on New Year’s Eve 1929 in Glens Falls, New York, the first of three children. Born Judith Kellogg, she was predeceased by her father, Charles; her mother, Sue “Mia” Griffin; her sister, Susan; her brother, Judson; and two former husbands. She is survived by her children, Greg Tidman, Kelly Tidman, Ann Chynoweth, and John Chynoweth; her grandchildren, Graham, Michael, Sarah, Sam, Julian, and Jack; and her great-grandchildren, Harlan and Meadow.
After attending Emma Willard School, Judy graduated in 1952 from Connecticut College in New London, Connecticut. She then worked at Boston Children’s Hospital.
Following her marriage to George Tidman, the couple and a friend traveled extensively, driving throughout Europe, the Middle East, and the Indian subcontinent before settling in Parkersburg, West Virginia, where George worked as a chemical engineer for DuPont. Before their divorce, they had two children, Greg Tidman of Burlington, Vermont, and Kelly Tidman of Lorida, Florida.
Judy later married Jack Chynoweth, a DuPont chemical engineer who lived in Wilmington, Delaware. Together they had two more children, Ann Chynoweth of Washington, D.C., and John Chynoweth of Arlington, Virginia.
Later in life, Judy once again embraced her love of travel, visiting every continent, with a special fondness for Russia, China, Italy, France, and Kenya. She could just as easily be found walking the Great Wall of China as singing karaoke and enjoying a glass of wine in Paris.
Judy was also a dedicated student at the University of Delaware’s Academy of Lifelong Learning, where she pursued her interests in music, art, and politics.
In 2010, Judy moved to the independent living community at Country House. She and her family are deeply grateful to the caring professionals whose support greatly enhanced her quality of life.
Judy will be greatly missed by her family and friends. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to The Grand Opera House in Wilmington, DE: Support Us | The Grand Opera House.
