Joyce Hughes

Joyce Hughes, 75, of Wilmington, Delaware, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend passed away at home on Tuesday, February 11th, 2020 after a courageous, seven month battle with brain cancer.

Joyce was born in Wilmington, Delaware and lived the early part of her childhood in the “Pink House” on the Winterthur estate (now the The Inn at Montchanin Village) where her grandfather was the mechanic and her mother was born.  She was very close to her family, especially her mother, Jeanette Carey, who predeceased her.  She attended Brandywine High School and received her Associates degree from Widener University.  Joyce greatly enjoyed her time and the people with whom she worked, creating lasting friendships, as she progressed through her career with Wilmington Country Club, Explosives Technology International (ETI), and finally retiring from American Honda Finance.

Joyce was surrounded by her daughters and their husbands, Jan & Mark and Ali & Brandon, her grandchildren Sam, Cody, Bridget, & Beckett, and with her grand-dogs Sydney & Sadie watching over her.  Joyce was a generous, caring, compassionate, empathetic, and determined spirit who touched so many lives. Her greatest passion in life was her children and grandchildren, but she also loved gardening, decorating, traveling, and solving other peoples’ problems. She was an avid cruiser and loved a good happy hour.

We are immeasurably grateful to have known and been loved by her and we will carry her in our hearts always.

The family would like to thank her amazing Christiana Care aid Sharon, who provided a steady ray of sunshine, along with Jonelle, Paula, and the wonderful team at Seasons Hospice. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Seasons Hospice Foundation.

Condolences

    Donna Riggs writes,
Ali and family, I am so sorry to hear this news. I unfortunately will be traveling for work on Thursday and will not be able to attend the service. I would not have made it in Delaware when I moved here for Honda if it were not for the friendship and guidance your Mom offered me. Joyce Hughes was a wonderful woman. She will me missed. Sincerely, Donna Rodrigues Riggs.

Joyce was all of the attributes described above. In addition to her generosity of spirit and loving demeanor, I enjoyed Joyce's playful nature and abiding dedication to her fun, funny tribe. I am sorry for the loss of your wonderful mother, grandmother and mother-in-law. She is a bright light still. Peace to you all.

    Stacy Palmer writes,
Dear Jan and Ali, In 1977 I began my career at Wilmington Country Club working alongside your dear mother. Joyce was kind, patient and thoughtful and we had a great deal of fun working together. She taught me so much about working with the big computers and cross trained me on many of the tasks that were the daily routine in the accounting office. It was a pleasure to be with her and in her company. My heartfelt condolences to you and your family -- may you always remember the fun times and the beauty she brought to life. With love, Stacy

Aban J Havewala lit a candle and writes,
My dear Jan and Alli, All my thoughts are with you as you prepare to say goodbye to your beloved Mother and Friend. I am sure there is much you wanted to say to her and didn't quite say it, memories of when you were young and how full of life she was, something special you will always remember about her and, I do know you will hear her voice in your minds from now on. The first time I met Joyce was at Acme when she was shopping with you, Jan. The next time was at Macy's. She looked very elegant in a black dress and she remembered me. I pray her soul finds eternal peace and may memories of this wonderful woman help both of you and, especially, your children, overcome your loss. My deepest sympathy and love.

    Stephen Allegretto writes,
Dear Jan, Ali and family, I am so sad for the loss of your mom and best friend. I am also sorry I am not able to be there in person to Celebrate her life, but know that my thoughts, love and prayers are with you. I met Joyce 35+ years ago when I was hired as the Assistant Clubhouse Manager at Wilmington Country Club. A few years earlier, Vicki, my now wife, had started working with Joyce and they became treasured friends. I will always remember Joyce as someone who enjoyed life, lived it to the fullest, and always maintained an upbeat positive attitude. She was a generous, caring, steady, and empathetic friend who was always there. As you celebrate he wonderful life, know that she is smiling and enjoying and endless cruise and remember all the "happy" hours and times spent together. Bon Voyage Joyce! With Love, Stephen
