Joseph E. DeStafney

Joseph E. DeStafney, of Yorklyn, DE, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, May 4, 2021 at the age of 95.

Joe was born at Wilmington Hospital to Joseph and Gertrude DeStafney. He graduated from Conrad High School. Joe proudly served his country in the U. S. Army during WWII in Germany. He then went on to work at General Motors retiring in 2002 after 53 years.

Joe grew up on his family farm (which is now Auburn Valley State Park) and loved his cows. He enjoyed traveling with his and Johanna’s close group of friends, going to the theatre, (especially musicals), and rooting for the St. Louis Cardinals baseball and Notre Dame football. He was a man of great faith; ushering and attending daily Mass at St. Mary of the Assumption for many years. Most of all Joe loved and cherished his family.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Johanna, along with daughter Geralyn Swain, sons Paul (Jeanie), Gery (Cynthia) and Chris (Tammy), 9 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, his sisters Sandy Carpenter (Jimmy) and Janice Iaconi. He is pre-deceased by his parents Joseph and Gertrude DeStafney and his brothers Francis and James (Chook).

The family would like to thank the staff of Compassionate Care Hospice, especially Jess, Jen, Rosemary, Mark and Donna. The family would also like to express their sincere gratitude to Ruthann from Angel Care that provided such good care and support the last 3 years.

In lieu of flowers, please have a Mass celebrated in his name. God Bless.

Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea, But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound and foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark; For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crost the bar. Love you Dad. Jeanie and I are really going to miss you. Godspeed.
