Janet M. Meckley

Janet Marie (Schlicher) Meckley, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 25, 2025, at the age of 88.

She was the devoted wife of Frederick William Meckley, with whom she shared 67 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they built a life filled with love, faith, music, and family.

A graduate of Allentown Hospital School of Nursing in 1957, Janet began her career as a registered nurse at Riverside Memorial Hospital in Wilmington. She cared deeply for others and brought that same compassion into her home when she chose to dedicate herself fully to raising her family.

She was the loving mother of four children and their spouses; Keith Meckley, who preceded her in death, and his wife Cindy, Debra McSweeney and husband Stephen; Susan Small and husband Frank and Joan Jack and husband Shawn. Her memory lives on in her surviving children, spouses, 8 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren, all of whom were touched by her kindness, warmth, and grace.

A classically trained singer, regaling in the opportunity to sing with the Allentown Symphony Orchestra, Janet, shared the gift of her beautiful voice with joy throughout her life. She was a lifelong member of her church choir and participated in numerous choral groups, bringing comfort and inspiration to those who heard her sing. In addition, her exceptional baking skills were a testament of her dedication to her church family, as she selflessly prepared communion bread for the services for 35 years.

Her faith was steadfast, her heart generous, and her presence a blessing to all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

A service to celebrate her life will be held on Friday, June 13, 2025, at 11:00am at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church 501 Duncan Road, Wilmington, Delaware. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her memory to the St. Mark’s music ministry.

Mom's bread was so good. I remember kids arguing over who gets the leftover when we had Youth Communion Dinners. Pastor usually got it!

    Elizabeth Gillette Arey writes,
Frederick, Debra, Susan and Joan, I grew up on Race Street in East Catty and lived three doors up from Janet at 525 Race Street. Janet was five years younger than me but she was one of the girls in the neighborhood that played "girl" games with me as we grew up. We spent many summer days at the Catty swimming pool. I remember her as a pleasant, fun loving playmate. Even though we lost contact after I married, I never forgot the carefree growing up days of which she was a part. May happy memories that Janet brought to your life comfort you and bring you peace. Heartfelt sympathy on the loss of your dear wife and mother. Elizabeth (she called me Betty)
