James Joseph Hildick

James Joseph Hildick, age 79, of Avondale, PA passed away peacefully on June14, 2018.

Jim was born in 1939 to James and Margaret McHale Hildick. He was a graduate of St. James High School, class of 1957. Jim attended St. Joseph’s University and, after serving his country in the United States Army, graduated from PMC College in 1968.

Jim spent the entirety of his career as an administrator in the healthcare industry and retired from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 2001.

Jim met the love of his life, Jane Utmar, in high school and they were married in 1961. Jim and Jane settled in Wilmington, DE and that is where they raised their only child, Judith.

The happiest days of Jim’s life were those spent with his family – on the beach in Sea Isle City, NJ, proudly attending St. Joseph basketball game, pursuing his love of military history by visiting local battlefields and reenactments, snuggling on the sofa with his beloved cat Maxx, or simply firing up the grill, where cooking time was measured, not in minutes, but rather in bottles of beer and laughs with Judi.

Jim and his beautiful blue eyes will be missed and lovingly remembered every single day by his wife of 57 years, Jane, his daughter Judith and son-in-law Brad Mitchell (who Jim could not have loved more if Brad were his own son). He is also survived by two brothers, John (Kathy) of Sea Isle City, NJ and Michael (Jeanette) of Maricopa, Arizona and sister in law, Cathy of Charlotte, NC.

He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Donald.

The family would like to thank our wonderful caregivers, Ashley and Tia, and the wonderful people we met through Heartland Hospice, all of whom provided loving care and support to the whole family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in Jim’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148-0142 or to The Church of the Holy Child, 2500 Naamans Rd., Wilmington, DE 19810.

Funeral Services

Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 on Wednesday June 20, 2018 at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Church, 10 Old Church Rd., Greenville DE 19807.

Interment will be private.

Condolences

    Catherine A Hildick writes,
My sincere condolence to Jane and Judy. You are never prepared to say good bye to someone you love no matter how long they suffer. Jim will be missed by all who knew him. May knowing others truly care help lighten your burden. So sorry I will not be able to attend the services. I am currently under electronic cardio conversion for A-Fib this Monday. Sharon is now my care giver. God Bless!

On behalf of the St. James High School Alumni Association, I extend our deepest sympathies and prayers on your loss. The Alumni Association will remember Jim at their annual Memorial Mass, April 7, 2019, at St. Madeline's Church, Ridley Park, PA.. I have known Jim for over fifty years and had the honor of serving as his baseball coach at St. James in 1956 and 1957.

    Martin Siekierski writes,
I first had the opportunity to meet Jim when he was hired in the mid-70s at Sacred Heart Hospital located at 9th & Wilson Sts. in Chester, PA. I was in my early 20s at the time working in the Accounting & Payroll department and Jim had been hired by Joe Hodgson. Even after 40 years, I still remember some of Jim's sayings such as: "JC, what are you doing to me?" and the time he brought some treats in for the staff and said, "here are some Mrs. Hildick's world famous chocolate chip cookies". I didn't know Jim for very long but he made a lasting impression on me and may perpetual light shine upon him.
