James Francis D’Wolf, age 92, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 7, 2022 in Wilmington, DE.
He was raised in White Plains, NY, the son of James and Elizabeth (Ehrhart) D’Wolf. Jim graduated from Harvard in 1949 and served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He obtained a second undergraduate degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an MBA from the University of Delaware.
Jim married St. Claire Hayden in Shreveport, LA, on January 31, 1960. He worked for the DuPont Company in Wilmington, DE and was a devoted husband and father. Summers were spent on the family sailboat cruising the Chesapeake, with off-season weekend jaunts to explore lesser-known towns and sights off the beaten path. He was the best sand-castle builder ever and played tirelessly with his grandchildren. He enjoyed backyard birding and was an avid reader with an uncanny ability to remember details of everything he’d read, even as a child.
Jim was a founding member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church where he served as treasurer and as a lay reader. He also served as treasurer of the Anglican Diocese of the Mid Atlantic. He was also a member, treasurer and teacher for the Wilmington Power Squadron.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife St. Claire, and his sisters Jeanne, Dorothy and Mary Ellen. He is survived by his daughters Thelma Best (Ward) and Elizabeth D’Wolf; grandchildren George, Henry, Elaine and Hayden; and great-granddaughters Jane and Claire.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim’s memory to the Sultana Education Foundation of Chestertown, MD.
