Irene Collins

Irene Collins passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 30, 2023 in Wilmington. She was the daughter of Samuel and Anna Klimuc. .She was not ill and her love of beauty allowed her to enjoy every moment of her nearly 95 years.

She was born in 1929 and lived all her life in Wilmington.  She was educated at Wilmington High School and at Goldey Beacom College.

She married her beloved Jim (James A Collins) in 1952, and they lived happily together for 50 years, until his death in 2002.

She was employed at TWA before moving to the Advertising Department of the then DuPont Company, from which she retired after 24 years.

She spent most of her free time maintaining their elegant home, supporting her husband in his burgeoning art career, and documenting his many inventions.  There were frequent

trips to the Chesapeake Bay area art galleries to exhibit Jim’s oil paintings.

She took great pride in keeping and running Their household of carefully curated antiques. Both she and her husband enjoyed attending estate sales and fine arts auctions,

to pursue their interest in significant period pieces. In their first home, Irene enjoyed entertaining in the stone addition Jim created.  And more recently, he constructed a patio for summertime gatherings. They both loved to play card games with family.

She is survived by seven nieces and nephews and growing numbers of their own families.

Services will be private as well as the Interment at Cathedral Cemetery, Queen of the Apostles Crypt, where she will

be laid to rest next to her husband.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Compassionate Care Hospice of Wilmington are encouraged.

I will always remember Ireen. I cut her hair for 40 years or better. Jim found me after visiting Morris Gibbons, my good friend and neighbor. He had the shoe-repair shop across the street from my salon. We were so close. My golden girls. She Kitty and I had many road trips together. I drove them any where they wanted to go. I continued to do her hair at Arden. She would get a big smile when she saw Lisa my dog and I. She always remembered us, and I will always remember her and Marsha her niece. Love you both. Sorry for your loss Marsha. 😘😘😘🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏💇‍♀️

To Irene’s family, I am so sorry for your loss. I worked with Irene at DuPont from 1960 till she retired in 1985. What a lovely, kind person she was. I would have to say she was probably one of my favorite people I ever worked with. Always had a smile for everyone and had nothing bad to say about anyone. Ironically, after Irene retired I learned she was my late sister in-law Rose Donofrio Campbell’s lifelong friend, Small world. You were blessed to have her in your life.

Cousin Irene was my mother’s best friend growing up in Wilmington on Franklin and Lancaster. Irene was my Godmother and we would talk about all the times that she and my mother, Loretta, and Delores would get together. We had a special relationship and she would call me or I would call her to catch up. We would see each other at church on Sundays at St. Catherine of Siena and she and Jim would talk and talk after Mass was finished about my mom and her and our families. I am sorry I did not know she passed and I will miss our talks in person and on the phone. She was so nice to me and my family. I will miss her smile. Kathy Shea
