Harry Smith Glaze, Jr.

Harry Glaze of Wilmington passed away peacefully on April 10, 2021, at the age of 88.

Born in Spokane, WA, to Harry Smith Glaze and Augusta W. Glaze, he attended Stanford University, where he met the love of his life, Lynn Ferguson. After changing his major from Journalism to Chemical Engineering, Harry graduated in 1955 and then earned a M.S. from the University of Washington in 1957. Harry and Lynn married that year and lived in Marin County while Harry worked at Chevron before returning to Stanford to obtain his MBA. The family then moved to Darien, CT, in 1967, when Harry took a job at Conoco, later acquired by DuPont. They came to Wilmington in 1984.

Harry was an opera aficionado and an enthusiastic traveler. He and Lynn visited 120+ countries and his traveling was curtailed only by COVID restrictions. He also was involved in the community, having served on the boards of both Opera Delaware and Girls, Inc. Those lucky enough to have known Harry admired his ever-positive spirit and his deep devotion to Lynn, exemplified by his sitting outside her nursing home window in a parka when in-person visits were not allowed.

Harry is predeceased by his parents and by his son Charles (1969 – 1990). He is survived by his wife, Lynn, his daughter, Catherine, and his daughter-in-law, Laura.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Christ Church Christiana Hundred to support its outreach efforts.

Condolences

    Mary Wilcosky writes,
Dear Lynn and Catherine, I was so saddened to hear about Harry. With his energy and positive outlook on life, I was sure he would live forever. A true gentleman in every sense of the word, he was kind and welcoming to a newcomer to OperaDelaware when I joined the staff in 2008. Over the years, I always could count on seeing him at performances and events, getting a glass of white wine for Lynn. The last time I saw Harry was this past July when OperaDelaware performed outside at the Country House, first in front for the residents and then, after that performance, I walked with Harry to the rear of the building for the 2nd performance at the Care Unit. Lynn was wheeled outside and Harry was able to see her in person for the first since since the lockdown had begun. They held hands and listened to the music and it was extremely touching to see. Lynn even recognized me and our General Director Brendan and waved to us. We at OperaDelaware will miss him terribly and offer any help you might need over these coming months. He was a wonderful patron and lover of opera and opera loved him back. Every performance of ours that he attended was always special because Harry was in the house. Wishing him peace and an eternity of the art form he loved.

    Janet Leigh writes,
I just learned of both Harry and Lynn's passing, and am very saddened. My husband, Philip Leigh and Harry went all the way through high school and Stanford University together. Phil was also in Harry and Lynn's wedding. We have been friends ever since. Harry was so cheerful, interesting and a pleasure to be with. His interest in opera was contagious; we learned more about music from him than from any other source. The four of us were such good friends. I am going to miss Harry and Lynn very much. If this note reaches Cathy Glaze I hope she will send me her address or email, so I can contact her.
