Harry Haldas

Harry Haldas of Wilmington, Delaware, fell asleep in the Lord on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at the age of 90. Harry was the founder of Haldas Market on Silverside Road in Wilmington, where he provided prime choice meats to his loyal clientele for over 30 years. He and his twin brother Nicholas worked together and welcomed their customers with warmth and care, treating them as if they were family. After 30 plus years, they sold the business and it still continues to operate to this day.

The Haldas family began by opening Haldas Brothers Quality Meats on King Street in downtown Wilmington with Tom, Robert and Mike Haldas working together. The family was approached to open a butcher shop in Hockessin with the Haldas name, but instead they decided to expand the King Street operation. They increased the number of meat cases, added a supermarket and called it New Market Basket. Eventually the downtown business was forced to close up as families were moving out of the city and into the suburbs.

With the drive to the suburbs, Harry looked at a storefront at Silverside and Marsh roads and knew this was for him. Harry loved the business and excelled at it. Once Nick returned from the Army, he came to work at the store as well. Once the Haldas name, a well known and respected name, went up on the new store they could not help but do an incredible business. It was a big operation, pulling 50,000 pounds of meat from Chicago every week. They were blessed with hard working employees, loyal customers and a love for their business and the community they were in.

Harry was a graduate of P.S. duPont high school where he was president of his junior class and played varsity football and basketball. He was a member of the track and field team, he won the Delaware Interscholastic in the 440-yard dash. Harry Enjoyed boating, water skiing, snow skiing and golf. He was a long-time member of the DuPont Country Club. He loved to travel and had homes in Wildwood Crest, N.J. and Secret Harbour in St. Thomas, V.I.

He was a life-long member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Family was very important to Harry and he loved bringing everyone together with barbeques and holiday celebrations at his home. Grandsons Gregory and Harry have fond memories of spending time with their “Papouli” on the beach and boardwalk in Wildwood. He was very generous, allowing family members to escape to his home in St. Thomas for vacations and honeymoons. In later years, he was excited about his projects with his gardening and re-decorating.

Harry is survived by his daughter, Robyn Maria Koutroumanis (Dean), his grandsons, Gregory and Harry, his twin brother Nicholas and sister-in-law, Rodie, sister-in-law Julia, and his nieces and nephews; Nicholas, Lynda, Barbara, Andronikki, Richard, Stacie and Lisa. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Erminia (Minnie) Haldas, his sister Evelyn Govatos and his older brother Daniel Haldas.

Harry’s family would like to express their warmest thanks and gratitude to his caregiver, Adeline and his dear friend David, for always being there for him.
