Guillermo Lionel Ortega

Guillermo Lionel Ortega passed away of natural causes on June 14, 2021. “Mito”, “G” as he was known to family and friends was born in Guatemala City, Guatemala and immigrated with his family to the United States in 1978. He was the son of the late Dr. William Ortega and the late Louise Ortega. He was a 1985 graduate of Malvern Preparatory School and attended Dickinson College.

Guillermo went on to have a successful career in the insurance industry where he specialized in underwriting of global benefits for several insurers including CIGNA, AIG, UHG and most recently as the Chief Underwriting Officer at International Medical Group.
Guillermo was an avid sports fan especially his beloved Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies and all things soccer. He enjoyed attending the Blue Hens football games where he was a season ticket holder. He also coached basketball at Tower Hill and coached youth soccer.

Guillermo had a passion for good food and wine and good people. He was a tremendous cook and hosted awesome holiday occasions and tailgates. Guillermo’s greatest joy was his family and friends. His smile and laughter were contagious, and he touched the hearts of everyone he met.
Guillermo is survived by his beloved wife Maureen Ortega (Cawley), brother Lionel and his wife Katherine, brother Carlos, nieces Shannon, Grace and Isabella and nephews Jack, Aiden, William, Matthew, Carlitos, Dimitri and Charlie.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers a contribution be made to Guillermo Ortega Memorial Scholarship (https://gofund.me/ef7265ff). I first met Guillermo in 2002 while we both worked at Cigna International. I was a sales leader and he an underwriting leader. Typically oil and water. But Gee was such a logical, strategic and ( way more than me) intelligent guy, we got along more like balsamic dressing. And always have since. A few of us will never forget the “GUSH” gatherings in my man cave. Fast forward to 2020 when I referred Gee to his current CUO role at IMG. He made an immediate and lasting impact on the entire Company, like very few can and like he did with me in 2002. Too early in life to lose such a treasure, but his positive influences will live on forever!

G, the reason I didn't mind the commute to Newark was the lunches with you. We worked nearly 20 years together and rarely talked about work. I will miss you. Próxima vez que nos veamos no te preocupes, llevaré las tortillas. Un abrazo amigo... David

I don’t want to think of your life as past tense. You were so present, always staying in the moment on that clear day. There was not a cloud in the sky, but there was plenty of ash; we brushed it off our clothes. The stench from the blast filled our nostrils. “Let’s keep moving,” you said. I loved that you kept having good ideas. You were always thinking forward, not looking at the recent past, at what had just happened. We’d left our client: there was to be no meeting after all. As we walked, I looked down toward where the towers had stood. Now they were reduced to an unfathomable heap, a pile of holy rubble and confetti. But you were right there by my side the entire day, keeping me focused on our next steps. Even days afterwards you were still helping me. Every day you asked me if I was smiling. So, I tried. A few years later you cooked up a story that you had to go to New York to visit the same client for some emergency. I chuckled at the ruse and was happy to go along with it to keep your secret safe. You’d shared with me that you were going to ask Maureen to marry you, and you wanted to buy her ring on Jewelers’ Row. You even pulled our corporate counsel into the mix, you little devil. I was flattered but not surprised that you trusted me with that. We’d learned to trust each other on that day. How could we not? There’s just something about going through a thing like that with someone. And now you’ve entrusted us with many happy memories of your intelligence, quick wit, kindness, generosity, and grace. But I’ll still always think about you on the 9/11 anniversary, and I’ll miss you. I’m pretty sure you visited me recently. The cardinal that perched nearby and peered straight at me. That was you, wasn’t it? I know I’ll see you again. The knowledge of that fills me with love and gratitude. I want a fancier string of words here to say thank you. But “thank you for everything” says it all. RIP Guillermo Lionel Ortega Maureen, my deepest condolences. With respect, Sue Whitmer

My deepest sympathy. I worked with “G” for 7 years at UnitedHealthCare, Global. I was his assistant that coordinated his travel reservations, processed his expense reports. He was absolutely wonderful to work with, I truly loved Mr. “G”. He will be truly missed.
