Frank S. Fountain

Frank S. Fountain, died November 25, 2022, at the age of 93.

Frank was born in Norfolk, Virginia. He attended the University of Virginia and graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He enjoyed a 39-year career with the DuPont Company, working for the Engineering Research Lab followed by the Engineering Physics Lab.

Frank married Elizabeth (Liz) W. Fountain (pre-deceased in 2015). They enjoyed 61 years of marriage, raising daughters, Nancy & Jane and traveling the world, following Frank’s retirement. Frank & Liz were also devoted members of OLLI Academy of Lifelong Learning and Frank attended classes up until the time of his passing. He was a member for more than 30 years. Frank was an avid believer in following one’s passion, amazed someone paid him to do something he loved (his job), and continued a quest to ponder new ideas his entire life. He spent years with his OLLI friends debating big questions over weekly lunches.

Frank was a highly skilled furniture and cabinet maker, making a large portion of the furniture in his home. An enthusiastic fisherman, he met up with a small group of friends (Eddie, Chris, and Henry) twice a year for many years, fishing at Eastern Shore, MD and Ocracoke, NC! He also served as a volunteer guide for the machine shop at Hagley Museum. Devoted to family and friends, Frank always had an engaging story, witty comment or joke to share!!

Frank is survived by daughters Nancy and Jane Fountain; son-in-law Stephen Rawlings; grandchildren: Aury Washburn (Eric Chiu), Megan Rawlings, Zane Rawlings, Katie Rawlings, Eli Rawlings (Sine Rawlings), Jeremy Rawlings (Stephanie Kaiser) and great grandchildren: Emily, Millicent, Dakota and Wesley.

Services will be private. Memorial donations can be made to OLLI Academy of Lifelong Learning https://www.olli.udel.edu/gifts/, Christiana Care https://christianacare.org/donors/, and Hagley Museum https://www.hagley.org/sub/hagley-annual-fund.

So sorry to hear of Frank's passing. When he came to the Engineering Physics Lab, we shared an office for many years. We had many great conversations over the years regarding life in general and technical issues. Frank developed a Draw Tension Instrument that was later sold to an outside company. That instrument is still being sold over 40 years later. Just one example of Frank always being ahead of his time. He will be missed at our weekly EPL lunches. I wish Jane and Nancy the best going forward.

Dear family of Frank Fountain- I am sending condolences on behalf of the Ben Franklin Circle group at OLLI. Frank was a member of our discussion group for many semesters. We benefited from his wisdom and delighted in his wit. He added such an interesting perspective to our conversations and always had an appropriate quote or a timely joke! We will miss him in our group. As I passed along the news, so many people have replied with their special memory of how Frank enhanced all of our lives. Our thoughts are with you in this sad time of loss. --- Diane Senerth
