Esther C. Martin

Esther Martin, formerly of Canterbury Hills, died on March 18, 2026, at Cokesbury Village in Hockessin at the age of 100. Born in Riverside, NJ, to Mildred L Comins and Robert L Coffin, she grew up in North Amherst, MA. A chemistry graduate of the University of Massachusetts, she obtained a master’s degree from Mount Holyoke and was a research associate at Amherst College before moving to Wilmington to take a position as a chemist at Hercules Inc. It was there she met her husband of 59 years, Arthur F. Martin, who predeceased her. Esther is survived by her three children, Andrea (Doug Albertson) of Avondale, PA, David of E Hartford, CT, and Cynthia, of Wilmington, in addition to her brother, Stewart Coffin, of Lincoln, MA and five nieces, a nephew and their families.

Esther was a Master Gardener and an accredited flower show judge. She judged design and horticulture classes at local and regional shows and at the Philadelphia Flower Show. She was a founding member of the Country Hills Garden Club, chaired the Delaware State Flower Show, was President of the Delaware Federation of Garden Clubs, and served on the National Council of the National Federation of Garden Clubs. In the latter capacity, she traveled extensively throughout the US and Canada. Esther was also a founding member of the Diamond State Iris Society and was a member of the Daylily and Orchid Societies. She was a charter member and board member of the Delaware Center for Horticulture. Esther served on the board of the Delaware Nature Society, formerly the Delaware Nature Education Society, and was one of their first volunteers. Esther served as a Staff Horticulturalist at Winterthur Museum and Gardens, where she edited their plant catalog, answered the plant hot line, and gave seminars on plant care. She gave many talks to local garden clubs about orchids, edible plants, and flower arranging. Her home and gardens in Canterbury Hills were featured on several Wilmington Garden Day tours. The daughter of a renowned naturalist, she was well-known for her expertise in horticulture, ornithology, herpetology, and nature in general.

Esther was a member of the Hockessin United Methodist Church. For many years, she volunteered at the Wilmington Flower Market and the Wilmington Junior League Well Baby clinic. At Cokesbury Village, she served on the Grounds and Horticulture Committee and wrote monthly columns for the Courier newsletter. She was known as the “Flower Lady” for providing weekly fresh floral arrangements for the Cokesbury lobby. She and her Weimaraner, Paxton, made regular pet therapy visits to the health care wing. Esther also enjoyed many volunteer activities at Sanford School where her children attended.

Art and Esther were life members of the Wilmington Kennel Club and the Delaware Valley Weimaraner club. They bred many champion and obedience titled dogs under the kennel name Hoch Essen.

Esther was known for her sense of humor and adventure, and for sharing her love of science, poetry, cooking, baking, sewing, needlework, travel, fashion and birdwatching. She was an avid Phillies and Eagles fan. In Esther’s memory, donations may be made to the Delaware Nature Society, www.delawarenaturesociety.org, 3511 Barley Mill Rd, Hockessin, DE 19707. The family will hold a private memorial at a later date.

Dear Family, I have so many fond memories of Esther’s generation; a first cousin of my mother’s. Family reunions kept us united and updated for so many years. And living in Pennsylvania as I grew up, we did visit Aunt Esther in Delaware as well as Aunt Leona and Uncle Arthur in Wayne, PA more often than the New England relatives. It feels to me that the extraordinary interests and talents of the 11 first generation Comins siblings as well as their children and grand children and beyond, live in all our relatives in some way. Surely it was true of Esther. That’s certainly how I continue to think about my fortunate heritage and relatives. So many “next generations” continued to develop in the arts and other meaningful professions and hobbies. Our heritage has a tremendously firm foundation and its blessings are passed along as I think of my cousins, their parents and the first generation. My condolences are sent along with my celebration of a life well lived. Esther is missed, but also forever remembered. What a remarkable Wife, Mother, Sister and Friend; more than I’ll ever fully know. A beautifully written obituary Andi, Cynthia and David. Thank you for keeping in touch. With love, ❤️🌹🙏🏻 Susan Carol (Slaymaker) Boyer

Andy, Cynthia and David, I am so sorry to hear of Esters passing. 100 years old is a great life. I am amazed yet not surprised by all her accomplishments and charity. She was a good friend of moms and became a good friend of mine when she started at the marketing nursery at Winterthur. What a lovely, caring lady she was. I will miss her but have many memories. With loads of love, Hank

Dear Dave, Andi and Cindy, So sorry to hear about Esther's passing. She lived a long and wonderful life. Growing up, "Mrs Martin" was one of the smartest and most gracious ladies I knew. So many fond memories at your house. Esther entrusted me to water her greenhouse plants when you were away. Quite an honor and responsibility! Best to all John

Dear Dave, Andi and Cindy, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your beautiful mother Ester. I have so many fond memories of growing up across the street from the Martin family. Your mother was always so helpful when it was carnival time. She really encouraged all the neighborhood children to learn, explore and be together. I remember often climbing the tree in your front yard and she never said a word or complained! She and my mother Louise were a big support to each other and became very close friends. Your mother, and your whole family, will always hold a special place in my heart. Love, Nita Accorsi Trexler ❤️

Dearly loved & sorely missed. Esther was an amazing person, always kind, considerate and smart as a whip. I feel lucky to have known her. I treasure my little bumblebee 🐝 irises she gave me so many years ago. She was a garden savant. I have fond memories of playing Rumicube with her and the family, and appreciate all the times she and Arthur cared for Luna. She trained her to go down the stairs slowly on a leash-no easy task because Luna was so excited and eager to go anywhere. May your many memories be a blessing during this time. Thinking of you all. ❤️Kevin

So sorry to hear this news. I do have very fond memories of hanging out with Esther and Art and especially the Rumicube games. She was always kind and love to take care of Luna. Even in the end, she managed to get a Christmas card off to us which I thought was wonderful. May your memories of her provide comfort. Let us know if there’s anything we can do.
