Emilie Joy Martin

Emilie Joy Martin (nee Gravel) passed peacefully on Sunday, June 21, 2026 to be received in the hands of God.

Emilie was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother married to Ken for 57 years. She was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1944. Emilie attended the University of Detroit and Michigan State University. She was a teacher of blind children in Michigan and Virginia, and taught elementary special needs students in the Delaware Public Schools for over 20 years. She enjoyed knitting and took delight in the company and accomplishments of her grandchildren. She was a volunteer with the St. Vincent de Paul Society for many years. Emilie will be lovingly and happily remembered.

She is survived by her husband Kenneth, children Jennifer McNay (Ewan McNay) and Adam Martin (Ruth Martin), and grandchildren, Aidan McNay and Keiran McNay.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, July 2, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, 7200 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707. A visitation will be held prior to mass from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow the mass at St Patrick’s Cemetery, Ashland, DE.

In lieu of flowers, her family prefers donations to the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Hockessin, DE.

    Dear Emilie was the Sweetest person I have ever met; she was also, my Best Friend. We knew eachother for almost 30 years; and taught in the same school for many years. She was a gifted and talented friend who would do anything for you. We enjoyed many lunches together, through the years. Emilie opened her lovely home to many friends; she was an excellent cook; I learned a lot from her expertise. Her knitting skills were top notch; she really enjoyed making sweaters and other gifts for all of her family. I remember her telling me, one of her favorite trips was to Portugal with some of her family. She will be sadly missed… May she Rest in Peace for eternity and beyond…

    Aunt Emilie was incredibly kind, clever, and creative. I will always remember how patient she was with me when teaching me how to knit when I was a kid. I will treasure the lovely knitting pieces she gifted over the years. She will be deeply missed.

    Sending lots of love and thinking fondly of Aunt Emilie. My favorite memory of her was having the opportunity to share a Thanksgiving meal with her, Uncle Ken, and the McNay family a couple years ago. It was so nice to feel at home with family after having just recently relocated to the upstate New York area. I remember Aunt Emilie greeting me warmly, as she always did, and sitting down with me on the couch to ask me lots of questions to make up for lost time! What a treat to have that time together!

    Aunt Emilie was such a kind, thoughtful, and sweet person. I loved visiting her and Uncle Ken with my family as a child, she always made us feel so welcome. I especially treasure the beautiful baby blanket she knitted for my children. They both used it as babies, and my daughter still sleeps with it today. It is a wonderful reminder of her love and generosity. She will be deeply missed.

    I still remember the blue yarn Aunt Emiliie gave me one summer as she taught us cousins some basic kills. My oldest daughter is now learning crocheting and knitting. Everytime my daughter sits down with her yarn I think of Aunt Emiliie's love and talent. She will be dearly missed and forever cherished.
