Dorothy Mae Johnson Smith

Dorothy Mae Smith, our beloved mother passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 at the age of 91.

Dorothy was married for 53 years to the late Russell W. Smith. She was a homemaker, a devoted wife and mother to her 5 children. We are sure our mom was thinking of her children and the wonderful mountains of West Virginia on her last breath. The country roads led her home to the place she belonged. In the loving arms of her husband Russell, sister Ann, granddaughter Heather and so many more that met her at heavens gate.

Our trips to her beloved West Virginia stomping grounds will always be remembered. Visiting the props place where she grew-up, visiting the beauty WV had to offer, Babcock State Park, New River Gorge Bridge, and Hawks Nest State Park. Family time with our Aunt Annie and her children. Hearing our moms West Virginia accent return in just a few hours.

To sum it up, our mom was a true southern lady that put family first. Thank you mom for teaching us the value of looking out for one another. Your job as our “rock” is done and we will carry out your legacy.

Dorothy is survived by her children; Deborah Spanakos of New Castle, DE, Michael A Smith of Youngstown, FL (wife Marian), Sharon McClure (husband Ian) of Crossville, TN, Joy Smith of New Castle, DE, and Thomas A Smith of Wilmington, DE. She has 10 Grandchildren, 7 Great Grandchildren, and 2 Great Great Grandchildren. Her siblings are Zeb Johnson (who predeceased her), Linda Rider (who predeceased her), Ann Rider (who predeceased her), and Michael Rider, all of Rainelle, WV.

Services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made in Dorothy’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org or by mail to PO Box 96011, Washington DC 20090-6011
