Charlotte Hardy

Charlotte Hardy, age 98, passed away on February 18, 2018, at Forwood Manor in Wilmington, Delaware.

Born in 1919 in Granite City, Illinois to Henry and Maude Deterding, she grew up in Kansas City, Missouri.  Charlotte received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Chicago in 1941.  While in college, she fell in love with her chemistry lab instructor, a graduate student named William Hardy.  The feeling was mutual and they married in 1941, shortly after her graduation.   They resided in Bound Brook, New Jersey until their move to Forwood Manor in 2007.

Following her marriage, Charlotte worked for several years at the Chipman Chemical Company.  After taking time to raise her two children, she resumed her career, holding several positions with the State of New Jersey, mainly with the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.

Charlotte loved reading and keeping up with the latest books, as well as the New Yorker Magazine.  She also enjoyed golf, a sport which she continued to play into her late 80’s.  She and her husband, William, had a passion for traveling throughout the world and visited many remote destinations that had only recently opened for tourism.  She was a member of the Raritan Valley Country Club and the Congregational Church of Bound Brook.

Charlotte was preceded in death by William, her husband of 67 years, and her grandson, Kurt Hardy.  She is survived by her son, William Thomas Hardy (Janet) of Fairfax Station, Virginia; her daughter, Christine Hardy Sudell (William) of Wilmington, Delaware; her grandchildren, Stephanie Braford, of Gulfport, Florida, Andrea Davey (Matthew) of Chevy Chase, Maryland, Pamela Park (Phil) of McLean, Virginia, and Catherine Shaw (Matthew) of Fredericksburg, Virginia.  She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren, Ashley Curtice, William and Caroline Davey, Christopher and Margaret Park, and Madeline, Camilla and Ellie Shaw.

The family would like to thank the staff of Forwood Manor who showed so much kindness to Charlotte throughout her ten and a half years of residence.

Condolences

    Anita Sobel writes,
I was so sorry to hear of Charlotte ‘s passing. She and my mother, Ethel Gorenstein, ate dinner together for many years at Forward Manor. I always enjoyed her company.... so bright and interesting. We shared stories about our travels. I saw her recently as my mother was very ill and in healthcare for a considerable amount of time. . Charlotte was a sweet lady. I never heard her speak badly of anyone. May her soul Rest In Peace and her memory be a blessing. Anita Sobel
