Catherine “Katie” Crowe McMillan

Catherine “Katie” Crowe McMillan, known to her friends as Katie, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2022, surrounded by her family.

Katie was a warm, compassionate person who was quick to laugh and even quicker to help others, donating her time to charitable organizations such as Meals on Wheels and the Needy Family Fund. She had many friends with whom she enjoyed playing bridge and loved creative endeavors such as knitting, writing, and needlepoint. She was an avid reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles and sudoku. She worked for the State of Delaware’s Department of Health and Social Services for 42 years, culminating in her role as a Deputy Director, before retiring to spend time with her family and volunteer on various Boards.

She is survived by her husband of fifty-nine years, William, as well as her son, Brad McMillan (and his wife, Nora) and her daughter Beth Splaine (and her husband, Kevin.) She was a loving Nonnie to her four grandchildren: Jake, Jesse, and Max Splaine, and Jackson McMillan, and adored her sisters Sally Barckett and Mary Flanagan (deceased), as well as her best friend Thelma Mayer. She is also survived by five brothers-in-law- James Flanagan, as well as John, Richard, David, and James McMillan, and their families. Although she’ll be missed by everyone, her soul flows through all of us.

Katie was always trying to make the world a better place, so in lieu of flowers, please make a donation in her memory to the charity of your choice.

Funeral Services

Katie will be interred in the Garden of the Nativity at Gracelawn Memorial Park on Friday, June 24, 2022 at 1pm.

Rosemary Killian lit a candle and writes,
Bill, Thelma and Family, My sincerest condolences to all of you. About 50 years ago, when it was a new idea, Katie and I shared a job at the Department. She was gracious, smart, smiling, and a good "mate", helping to overcome the idea that such sharing couldn't be done. She was an oasis of calmness and always kind in her dealings with other people, clients and coworkers, but found the rye humor in problems which faced us daily. Above all, her focus was always her family and she was filled with glowing pride and joy at each of their accomplishments. It was also apparent that she was loved and cared for in return. She was a wonderful person who lived an admirable life. Her passing is a loss for all.

    Marie Nonnenmacher writes,
My sincere condolences go to Katie's family. I remember Katie fondly as a colleague, fellow state employee and incredibly kind and gracious lady. At first, she seemed to be prim and proper, but as I got to know her over the years, I realized how funny and fun loving she was and what a great sense of humor she had. She helped me both personally and professionally as I endeavored to learn more about the state programs Katie helped to manage and I will be forever grateful to her for that. She will not be forgotten.
