Carol G. Illingworth

Carol Gibson Illingworth, 80, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away peacefully at home on June 29, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in 1946, at the old Delaware Hospital in Wilmington, Carol was the daughter of William “Hoot” Gibson and Ann Roberts Gibson. A proud Wilmington native, Carol carried deep love for her family, her city, and the lifelong friendships and community connections that shaped her life.

Carol was predeceased by her beloved husband and best friend, Don Illingworth, in 2015, and by her brother Bill Gibson in 2016.

She is survived by her devoted son Matthew and his wife Ava; her stepdaughter Lin Illingworth and Lin’s husband Bill Maddocks; and her stepson Mark Illingworth. She was an adoring and deeply loved Mimi to her grandson Lincoln, who brought enormous joy to her life.

Carol is also survived by her brother Steve Gibson; her sister and brother-in-law Jayne and George Robinson; her sister Debbie Galloway; and many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were made better by her kindness, steadiness, humor, and generous heart.

Throughout her life, Carol was known for her quiet strength, deep loyalty, and remarkable ability to care for others. Whether through her professional work, her volunteer service with the VA and Ronald McDonald House, her treasured friendships, or the love she poured into her family, Carol made people feel welcomed, supported, and truly seen.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803 on Wednesday, July 1, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. A Visitation will be held prior to the service from 11 to 12.

In accordance with Carol’s wishes, her ashes will be scattered alongside Don’s in the Chesapeake Bay, where the two of them spent many happy years boating, laughing, and building a life together — and also at the bus stop where they first met.
