Carl Stuart Vandenbraak

Carl Stuart Vandenbraak, 65, of Wilmington, Delaware, suddenly passed away on Thursday, January 29, 2026.

Carl was born in 1960, in Wilmington, Delaware, to his parents, Bayard and Fay (Buckwalter) Vandenbraak. A proud lifelong resident of Brandywine Hundred, he was raised in a loving home alongside his six brothers and sisters.

Carl attended St. Mary Magdalen School, Springer Junior High School, and Brandywine High School, graduating with the Class of 1979.

He grew up surrounded by countless friends, filling his days riding bikes and finding any excuse to be outside. Carl could often be found working on cars or hanging in one of the many parking lots along Concord Pike, making memories and stories that only grew better with each retelling. Weekends were frequently spent on the road to Stone Harbor, New Jersey, a place he returned to time and again over the years, and one he continued to enjoy visiting with Debbie by his side.

A lifelong racing fanatic and devoted NHRA fan, Carl had a true passion for cars and everything automotive. That passion shaped much of his life and career. He spent nearly 40 years with Delaware Cadillac, where his knowledge, dedication, and unwavering work ethic earned him the respect of colleagues and friends alike – many of whom became family to him. Cars weren’t just a hobby; they were part of who he was.

One of Carl’s greatest gifts was people. He seemed to know everyone, and everyone seemed to know him. He had an incredible influence on those around him and built friendships wherever he went. If you needed help, advice, or a solution, he “had a guy” and if he didn’t, he would find one. Carl was the keeper of the tales and of everything old. He saw the value in everything and everyone. Each thing, each relationship, had its place.

Carl was the kind of person who drew people in effortlessly. He had a huge presence; warm, magnetic, and unforgettable. He loved his family fiercely and treated his friends as family. He was always there for the people he cared about. Carl took immense joy in being a dad and loved his children; nothing made him prouder than the people they became and the lives they were building.

In recent years, Carl’s greatest joy was playing with his grandchildren. They were truly the light of his life. When he was rolling around on the floor and wrestling with them, he showed the energy and limberness of a man who hadn’t spent decades bent over the hoods of hot rods.

Carl leaves behind his loving wife of 40 years, Debbie. Together since high school, they had barely left each other’s side ever since. From high school on, Debbie was Carl’s lifelong partner in crime, his greatest comfort, his steady presence, and the love that anchored every part of his life. He is also survived by his son, Bobby (Samantha), and his daughter, Stacie (Bret); his grandchildren, Elliot and Vivian, with another on the way; his siblings Steve (Cheryl), Mary (Reggie) Gioffre Blaisdell, Carol (Norm) Reid, Kurt (Pam), and Suzanne (Ted) Tompkins; his brother-in-law Jim (Tracey) Parramore; and umpteen nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Tommy and his parents.

Though our time with him was far too short, Carl’s spirit, love, and legacy will live on in the innumerable lives he touched.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 8, 2026 at 12:00 pm at Chandler Funeral Home, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803. A visitation will be held prior to the service from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Interment will be private.

My husband, Jay, met Carl through his days at General Motors. He’s known him a good 30 years and thinks of him as a brother. He always had such wonderful things to say about Carl!!! When Jay and I got married at the JOP in Wilmington, 16 years ago, it was a VERY small group of family and friends on a weekday. Jay’s family couldn’t be there, because they lived so far away. When we realized how close we were to Carl, at the last minute, we called and invited him to come over and eat with us. He was uncomfortable for a second till we stressed that he was Jay’s family. We wanted him to be with us! He left work and came over to join us at the Hotel DuPont. Jay was sooooo happy that his ‘brother’ was there! Of course, I was too! Carl will be missed… We always enjoyed seeing him at car shows. We’ll remember him fondly… Much love and sincerest condolences to the family…

I met Carl during the time I worked at Delaware Cadillac, quickly creating a bond lasting over thirty years. Driven of course - by the love of anything automotive. The memories we shared, the stories, I could comfortably talk with him for hours. One of only a few friends that share such a deep passion for our hobby. A great person indeed, so well described in your remembrance. My heart aches for Debbie and his family, and we pray that God help you all through this difficult time.

    David Camp writes,
I have struggled to find the right words, the right words to bring comfort to Debbie, Bobby, Stacie and the rest of Carl‘s family. In my mind, they simply do not exist. His passing has been very difficult for me. We have been friends for 30 over years and worked close proximity about 8 feet from his desk to my workstation for 20 years. It is like I’ve lost a brother. I’ve never had a brother, but if I did, I would want him to be just like Carl. We had daily conversations, about parts, about daily events about our plans and about life. We would debate often Mopar versus Chevrolet, Cowboys versus Eagles, however we did agree on the Flyers and the Phillies. Now there’s only silence coming from his office and it makes something inside hurt. I am going to miss going out to lunch with him on Fridays looking for the perfect chili cheese dog. I am going to miss his stories about past experiences. He achieved a lot of success in many of his endeavors. He said one of the factors was something he learned from his dad years ago that effort equals results. I’ve never forgot that. Carl is going to be missed by a lot of people, he has touched a lot of people in his life. I am praying for each and every one of you who liked and loved Carl find some relief from your sadness. I do believe that someday, on a day of God‘s choosing that I will see my friend again. Perhaps we can go out and get a Chili cheese dog and watch a drag race.

I've only worked with Carl for only about 7 years. Carl was always on top of his game and made sure you were too. He was my supervisor but he always seemed like that great uncle to me. The talks of family and friends we had and the adatude that he had with it drove that home. I would tell him about all the mods and things I was doing to my car. I would always expect the " leave that car alone" but i knew he was a hot rodder himself (The chevy guy). The love for racing and cars bonded us and what i leared from him I will always hold near to my heart. To Mrs. Vandenbraak and family I prey that God sends you peace and the will to hold on.

I first met Carl around 1974, the most annoying 13 year old I had ever seen, from the perspective of a 18 year old girl. He and his buddies would ride their bikes to Talleyville citgo at the 202 split sometimes to get the gossip going around. I remember the time we had a huge apple fight and I got smacked right in the nose guess who did it? I never saw a bike being peddled so fast in my life when I chased after him. I did not know thought it was Carl until I came to work at Cadillac in 1998 that it was him when we were recounting stories. In the 28years we have worked together we have shared many stories as everyone knows Carl was a first rate storyteller. Rest easy my friend. Condolences to all the family on losing a special man.

Debbie and Family, There are no words to express our extreme sadness we are feeling for you and your beautiful family. We loved going on our Delco AC trips and our exotic GM trips with you guys, so many years ago. Whenever we took a day trip and needed a driver, Carl would always volunteer to sit in the front seat, so that he could chat away finding out any information he could about the place. He was so full of life and adventure. We remember on one trip where we were interested in going parasailing, and before he would let us all sign up, he wanted to check out how the locals operated their business for a couple days, to be sure it was safe. We have so many fond and fun memories of being with you and Carl, and we will miss him tremendously. We love you all so much, and are here for you and your family❤️❤️❤️

Carl was a cherished friend, neighbor, and a lasting part of the Blue Rock Manor community. Growing up together, we shared countless memories filled with laughter, long conversations, and a shared love of hot rods alongside the rest of the 202 members. Those simple moments of friendship and camaraderie became some of the most meaningful times of our lives. Carl had a way of bringing people together with his warmth, humor, and genuine spirit. He was the kind of person you could always count on for a good story, a helping hand, or just someone to sit and talk with. His presence made ordinary days feel special, and his friendship left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Though Carl is no longer with us, the memories we created and the bond we shared will remain forever in our hearts. He is deeply missed and will always be remembered with love, With Love Mike Edwards
