Carl Stuart Vandenbraak

Carl Stuart Vandenbraak, 65, of Wilmington, Delaware, suddenly passed away on Thursday, January 29, 2026.

Carl was born in 1960, in Wilmington, Delaware, to his parents, Bayard and Fay (Buckwalter) Vandenbraak. A proud lifelong resident of Brandywine Hundred, he was raised in a loving home alongside his six brothers and sisters.

Carl attended St. Mary Magdalen School, Springer Junior High School, and Brandywine High School, graduating with the Class of 1979.

He grew up surrounded by countless friends, filling his days riding bikes and finding any excuse to be outside. Carl could often be found working on cars or hanging in one of the many parking lots along Concord Pike, making memories and stories that only grew better with each retelling. Weekends were frequently spent on the road to Stone Harbor, New Jersey, a place he returned to time and again over the years, and one he continued to enjoy visiting with Debbie by his side.

A lifelong racing fanatic and devoted NHRA fan, Carl had a true passion for cars and everything automotive. That passion shaped much of his life and career. He spent nearly 40 years with Delaware Cadillac, where his knowledge, dedication, and unwavering work ethic earned him the respect of colleagues and friends alike – many of whom became family to him. Cars weren’t just a hobby; they were part of who he was.

One of Carl’s greatest gifts was people. He seemed to know everyone, and everyone seemed to know him. He had an incredible influence on those around him and built friendships wherever he went. If you needed help, advice, or a solution, he “had a guy” and if he didn’t, he would find one. Carl was the keeper of the tales and of everything old. He saw the value in everything and everyone. Each thing, each relationship, had its place.

Carl was the kind of person who drew people in effortlessly. He had a huge presence; warm, magnetic, and unforgettable. He loved his family fiercely and treated his friends as family. He was always there for the people he cared about. Carl took immense joy in being a dad and loved his children; nothing made him prouder than the people they became and the lives they were building.

In recent years, Carl’s greatest joy was playing with his grandchildren. They were truly the light of his life. When he was rolling around on the floor and wrestling with them, he showed the energy and limberness of a man who hadn’t spent decades bent over the hoods of hot rods.

Carl leaves behind his loving wife of 40 years, Debbie. Together since high school, they had barely left each other’s side ever since. From high school on, Debbie was Carl’s lifelong partner in crime, his greatest comfort, his steady presence, and the love that anchored every part of his life. He is also survived by his son, Bobby (Samantha), and his daughter, Stacie (Bret); his grandchildren, Elliot and Vivian, with another on the way; his siblings Steve (Cheryl), Mary (Reggie) Gioffre Blaisdell, Carol (Norm) Reid, Kurt (Pam), and Suzanne (Ted) Tompkins; his brother-in-law Jim (Tracey) Parramore; and umpteen nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Tommy and his parents.

Though our time with him was far too short, Carl’s spirit, love, and legacy will live on in the innumerable lives he touched.

My husband, Jay, met Carl through his days at General Motors. He’s known him a good 30 years and thinks of him as a brother. He always had such wonderful things to say about Carl!!! When Jay and I got married at the JOP in Wilmington, 16 years ago, it was a VERY small group of family and friends on a weekday. Jay’s family couldn’t be there, because they lived so far away. When we realized how close we were to Carl, at the last minute, we called and invited him to come over and eat with us. He was uncomfortable for a second till we stressed that he was Jay’s family. We wanted him to be with us! He left work and came over to join us at the Hotel DuPont. Jay was sooooo happy that his ‘brother’ was there! Of course, I was too! Carl will be missed… We always enjoyed seeing him at car shows. We’ll remember him fondly… Much love and sincerest condolences to the family…
