Barbara F. Mitchell

Merely two months shy of celebrating her 90th birthday, our charming, vibrant, and beautiful, Barbara “went home” on Saturday, April 20, 2024 surrounded in her home by her cherished and loving family.

Barbara was raised in Bluefield, West Virginia. She left to pursue her education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she met the love of her life and soulmate, Don Mitchell.  She was a dedicated and loving mother who passionately supported their five children throughout her life.  In addition, Barbara generously devoted her time to various volunteer organizations including Wilmington Hospital and the Junior League of Wilmington.  Devout in her faith, she served as Deacon and Sunday school teacher at Westminster Presbyterian Church.  She had a beautiful singing voice and taught piano to countless local children.  As a member of Wilmington Country Club she delighted in the camaraderie of golf, bridge, and cherished friendships.  Barbara’s zest for life extended to her love of travel, which she enthusiastically shared with her closest friends.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Donald P. Mitchell, and her son, Michael T. Mitchell.  She is survived by her daughter, Hollister L., her three sons, Randall P. (Christina), Bradford H. (Judith), and R. Rhett (Erin), and grandchildren (Matthew (Laura), Davis, Colman, and Aubrey).  She will be lovingly remembered by all those who knew her for a very long time.

A Funeral Service will be held 11:00 am Friday, April 26, 2024 at Westminster Presbyterian Church located at 1502 W 13th Street Wilmington, DE 19806.  Interment will be private.

The family would like to thank all of the nurses, aides and Delaware Hospice for their love, compassion, and support.

In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to: The Michael Mitchell ’78 Memorial Fund, c/o Wilmington Friends School, 101 School Road, Wilmington, Delaware 19803.

I met Ms. Barbara and her daughter Holly three years ago. Ms. Barbara had the the most beautiful smile and sweetest personality. I was instantly drawn to her. I will never forget how nice she was to me. She loved when I told her about the religious theater Sight and Sound in Lancaster, PA. Holly took her and they were very impressed. I will truly miss my talks with sweet Ms. Barbara. God bless you Holly for your love and patience with your mother.

From the time I caddied for Barbara Mitchell as a teenager I was touched by her sweetness and gentle nature ! She raised her family to be humble and dignified with class as her own character. I always admired the Mitchell family for these qualities .Know that you all will have one of the most gentle of angels in your mother watching over you ♥️ all !!
