Anne C. O’Brien

Anne Catherine O’Brien (Garland), age 93, of Hockessin, DE died Sunday, March 10th, at Cokesbury Village.  Anne was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1930 to Martin and Mary Garland. She graduated from West Catholic Girls High School of Philadelphia in 1948. On October 20, 1951, Anne married Edward O’Brien at St. Francis de Sales Church in Philadelphia.  In 1956, Ed joined the Dupont Company and the family moved to South River, NJ.  In 1961, the family moved to Wilmington DE.

Anne was devoted to her family, friends and church.  Anne was a parishioner at Saint Mary Magdalen church for over fifty years, and ten years at St. Mary’s of the Assumption upon her move to Cokesbury.  Anne was an avid bridge player and attained the Life Master status with the American Contract Bridge League.  In their retirement years, Ed and Anne enjoyed traveling to Ireland, Florida and other destinations in the US.

 

Anne was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ed; her sisters Mary Kelly and Joan Riley; and her brother Martin Garland Jr.  Anne is survived by her five children, Patricia Kutza (Joseph); Edward O’Brien Jr. (Jane): John O’Brien (Mary); Virginia Aitken (Doug); and Mary Thorn (Scott); eleven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.

 

Anne’s family expresses sincere thanks for the kind and excellent care she received from the staff at Cokesbury Village and ACTS Hospice of Cokesbury.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, March 15, 2024 at 11:00 am at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 7200 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707, where relatives and friends may call after 10:00 am.  Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to ACTS Hospice Fund. Checks made payable to ACTS Legacy Fund with Hospice Fund in the memo and mailed to 420 Delaware Drive, Fort Washington, PA 19034 or online at www.actsgiving.com .

 

Funeral Services
