Robert Hirt

Robert P. Hirt, age 91, of Glen Mills PA, formerly of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 15, 2020.

Bob graduated from Mt Pleasant High School in Schenectady NY, and received a BS in Chemistry from the University of Delaware. Bob was a chemist, product manager and sales executive with Hercules Chemical Company for over 30 years, and then, late in his career, he became an entrepreneur, establishing a film and plastic distribution company. He was a successful and personable business executive who established long lasting relationships with his clients.

His favorite role was being a husband and father. He was involved in all of his children’s activities as they were growing up, including little league, Boy Scouts of America, and many numerous concert and jazz band performances. Bob, and his wife, Mary took their family on vacations, where he imparted his enthusiasm for different activities such as camping trips to Lake George NY, water skiing, snow skiing, scuba diving, and boating. He only lit the family station wagon on fire once and it was an awesome story. After raising their family, Bob and Mary had a keen interest in travel and exploring the world with their many friends. He brought a spirit of curiosity and fun to everything he did.

For over a decade, Bob was a volunteer at Habitat for Humanity and Independence Service Dog Foundation. He was a private plane pilot and was an accomplished sail plane pilot. He was a founding member and president of the DelPenn Flying Club, as well as, a member of the Brandywine Soaring Club.

Bob is predeceased by his parents, Max and Elise (Richards) Hirt of Schenectady, New York, and his grandson, Kevin Hirt. He is survived by his wife of over 62 years, Mary, as well as his children Paul Hirt (Lynn Campana), Randy Hirt (Alberta), and Pam Calvert-Hirt (Mark Calvert); and his grandchildren Mackenzie Hirt, Morgan Niland, Alexandra Hirt, Sam Calvert, and Max Calvert.

Condolences

Melissa Heim Lawrence lit a candle and writes,
The Hirt’s were the most special neighbors and friends while I was growing up. When I was young, I remember looking up at small planes and asking, “could that be Mr. Hirt?” He always had the biggest and warmest smile and made me feel very welcome. But the funniest story that I will never forget is the day I was in my sisters wedding. As we were rushing out the door, late of course I decided I would use the restroom one last time., My maid of honor dress had a very long sash down the back and of course it fell in the toilet, it would have been quite obvious as I walked down the aisle. So there was kind olé Mr. Hirt helping me dry it with a hairdryer so it didn’t look so silly. He had a warm, down to earth soul. My heart and prayers are with the Hirt family. The Heim’s miss you all.,

Frank Coughlan lit a candle and writes,
Mary, Paul, Randy and Pam. I was sorry to hear the news about Bob. Your family was my FAVORITE babysitting job back in Acton, Massachusetts. I spoke with Bob when I moved to Wilmington 25 years ago, and then, sadly, I lost contact. Life has been good to me, and, evidently to you all as well. Peace... ~Frank Coughlan
