Michele Gioffre Smith

Michele Gioffre Smith, 47, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away with loved ones by her side on Wednesday, July 11, 2018.

She was a graduate of Archmere Academy 88’ and the University of Delaware 92’. Post college, Michele spent more than two decades working a succession of successful jobs in Washington DC, culminating in the White House, where she worked for the Vice President.

Much to the delight of her massive family and legions of friends, Michele eventually came back home to Wilmington, bringing with her her beloved husband and treasured sons. Soon thereafter, she found a new passion, working as the Chief of Staff for North America Marketing for the multinational software firm, SAP. Michele did what she always did — made a deep, lasting and profoundly positive impression on all who were lucky enough to work alongside her. She will be sorely missed by her many friends and colleagues.

Michele is survived by her husband Steve and her beloved boys Connor (12) and Jack (10); her parents Dominic and Eileen Gioffre; her sister Christina Gioffre; brother D. Michael Gioffre (Krista); and sister Sarah Rogers (Jim). She also leaves behind her nieces and nephews Sophia Gioffre, Abigail Brainard, Jake, Rose and Kate Rogers, and Dominic Gioffre, III.

Michele’s loss will be felt deeply by all of those who knew and loved her. Her family, friends and the beach were what made her happiest. Her smile was luminous, her laugh infectious and her spirit, indomitable. She was joy and she shined.

In lieu of flowers and in memory of Michele, we ask that you take a moment to pull those close to you a little bit closer. Call your family and friends and tell them how much you love them. Open your arms and embrace life, all of it, the good, the bad and the beautiful — just like she did. And when you see Connor and Jack, always remind them how truly special their mother was, and how much she loved being their mom.

Funeral Services

Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 15, 2018 at the Wilmington Country Club, 4825 Kennett Pike, Greenville, DE from 3-6 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, July 16 at 10 AM at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Church, 10 Old Church Road, Greenville, DE. Interment will follow Mass in the church’s cemetery.

Losing a loved one too early is like a dagger through the heart. I am so sad for her family she left behind, but happy knowing that she was truly loved and loved her family and friends. I only spent time with her a few days in her home, but she was kind, sweet, interesting and interested, smart, thoughtful and caring. What a life she led and the people she met. She touched all of their lives and will be surely missed. My deepest condolences to her husband, children, family and friends. My thoughts are with you.

Eilene and Hub. I feel your pain and I am so sorry for your loss. My daughter who is the same age as Michele had cancer too (Hodgkins Lymphoma). She also attempted suicide at one point and was hospitalized for ten days. My mother always said, God take me before my children. How true that is. I am so sorry I couldn't attend the funeral. My husband is handicapped from a TBI and three strokes. He is in pain and expecting another operation. I can't leave him without a sitter. I know you understand. Please accept my love and prayers. Remember, "God saved the best for last!" Cousin Sandy Ventresca Burkholder
