David Tristram Mage, 81, of Newark, Delaware and formerly of New York, NY and Chapel Hill, NC passed away at home on March 15, 2018 surrounded by his family and dogs.
Dr. Mage was a graduate of the High School of Music and Art in New York City; Columbia University, BS in Chemical Engineering, and the University of Michigan, PhD in Chemical Engineering. His work was diverse, and included employment at San José State University (California) as Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a Senior Scientist, the World Health Organization as an Air Pollution Expert in South-East Asia, and as a scientist at Temple University with the Institute for Survey Research. As his career progressed, Dr. Mage became passionate for understanding Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). From 2006 until his passing, Dr. Mage worked as an independent researcher towards health equity attainment in infant mortality (IM) and SIDS in the US and elsewhere.
He leaves behind his wife E. Maria Donner and their children, Mika and Susanna, as well as his children from a previous marriage, Diane Ulla, Lars, and Christina.
Dr. Mage continued with his devotion to science and helping others by donating his body to the Anatomical Gift Program with the University of Delaware. While there will be no funeral or memorial service, Dr. Mage asked that his friends and colleagues be informed that following his anatomical donation, his cremated remains will return to the world as air pollution.
In lieu of flowers and to support SIDS research, all donations should go to the Dr. David Mage SIDS Doctoral/Predoctoral Fellow. This donation is to sponsor a fellow on a SIDS and IM research project. Every year doctoral and predoctoral fellows are recruited across the nation to be trained and conduct research on SIDS and IM as well as other pediatric health outcomes. Checks should be made to: Nemours Fund for Children Health, Health Disparities Science Research, Infant Mortality/SIDS Research Project, C/O Ms. Patricia Oceanic, Administrative Director, Nemours OHEI, Shands House, 1600 Rockland Rd., Wilmington, DE 19804 or online at www.nemours.org/give on behalf of Dr. Mage.
