Yeates Conwell

Yeates Conwell of Wilmington, Delaware died quietly on February 23, 2017 with his children at his side. He was 94.

Yeates was born in Albany, NY, the only child of Edith and George Conwell. He attended St. Paul’s School in Concord, NH then Princeton University, from which he graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1944. Following service in the U.S. Navy during WWII, Yeates returned to Princeton to complete his PhD in Chemistry. It is there that he met Mary Atwood. They married in 1947 and remained at each other’s sides for 62 years until Mary’s death in 2010.

After a brief stint with Goodyear as a polymer chemist, Yeates joined the DuPont Company in 1949 from which he retired in 1985. In addition to Mary and his children, Yeates’ passions were golf, gardening, sailing with his close friends, and Princeton. Ever the Tiger, he served as President, Treasurer, and Class Agent for the Class of ’44, and secretary of the Princeton Association of Delaware. He was active in Christ Church, Christiana Hundred.

Yeates is survived by his two children, Anne Nemetz and her husband Charles, of Redding Ridge, CT and Yeates Conwell, Jr. and his wife Gay, of Honeoye Falls, NY; and his grandchildren William of Portland, OR, Claire of Rochester, NY, and August Conwell and his wife, Anibel Ng, of Manassas, VA.

Funeral Services

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 1:00 pm at the Chapel of Christ Church, Christiana Hundred, with a committal ceremony immediately preceding the service and a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to your favorite charity.
