William H. Flack

William (Bill) Hough Flack passed away peacefully on January 27, 2026. Bill was born in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1927, to John and Irene Flack. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Joan Kiggins Flack; his four children, Janis Perkins (Fred), Andrew Flack, Jill Flack (Gregg Siegal), Dori Capretta (Nick); and five grandchildren, Nick and John Capretta, Wiliam and Christine Siegal, and Phoebe Flack. His parents and brother Sydney predeceased him.

As a young child, Bill lived in Indianapolis, Indiana and later, his family moved to a rural area outside of the city. Bill was an industrious youth, working at a young age selling newspapers and later, selling snacks at minor league baseball games, Butler University sporting events and for several years, at the Indianapolis 500. Bill was also quite an athlete, playing football, basketball and baseball at Broad Ripple High School. He often told the story of the 95-yard touchdown he made, a feat that brought his team to victory.

After high school, Bill served in the military and then attended Indiana University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry in 1950 and was an active member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. It was there, as luck would have it, that Bill met Joan Kiggins on a blind date in 1953, when they joined a mutual friend at a basketball game between rivals, Ohio State University (where Joan graduated) and Indiana University. Joan and Bill married in 1954 and moved to Terre Haute, Indiana and then to Monroe, Louisiana where Bill worked for Commercial Solvents Corporation. Within a few years, they moved to Columbus, Ohio where Bill earned his MBA from Ohio State University in 1957. Upon receiving his MBA, Bill was hired by DuPont to work in Information Systems, which brought Bill and Joan to Charleston, West Virginia with two young children in tow. A few years and two more children later, Bill and Joan moved to Wilmington, Delaware where Bill continued his career in Information Systems with DuPont. He also taught an evening computer class at the University of Delaware for more than 20 years.

Following his retirement from DuPont in 1987, Bill and Joan built a house overlooking Assateague Island, where they resided for more than 10 years before returning to Wilmington.

Well into his 80s, Bill enjoyed gardening, playing tennis and racquetball, volunteering at the Unitarian Church and with his neighborhood association, and spending time with friends and of course, spending time with Joan, his four adult children, five grandchildren and three sons-in-law.  Bill had a witty personality and an engaging sense of humor, and family, friends and acquaintances shared many laughs with him throughout his life.

A special thanks to Stonegates Health Center for the wonderful care and support they showed Bill since he moved there in 2021.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Condolences

Chris Mattair lit a candle and writes,
I particularly remember Mr Flacks’ enormous leaf bonfires among the massive boulders on the bank of the creek that ran along our adjacent back yards. We and the Flack kids grew up playing joyfully on Marhill Drive where our parents and other neighbors gave us a safe and happy childhood. Mr. Flack was a good man. My prayers and condolences for the family.
