Vincent T. Ciuryla, PhD, MBA, died peacefully on January 15, 2026, surrounded by his loving family, after a long battle with cancer.
Vin, as he was known to family and friends, was born in Providence, Rhode Island, in June 1946 to Vincent Joseph and Elizabeth Irene (née Osmanski) Ciuryla. Raised in St. Casimir’s parish, he attended the parish elementary school and graduated from La Salle Academy in Providence. There, he excelled academically and participated in track and field, winning the 1964 Rhode Island state championship in the 880-yard dash.
Vin went on to Manhattan College, earning a degree in chemical engineering. Before beginning graduate studies, he joined the US Army reserves, training as a medic and serving in reserve units in Rhode Island and Chicago. After basic training, Vin attended MIT in Cambridge, earning a master’s degree in chemical engineering. He then attended Northwestern University in Chicago, earning a PhD in chemical and biomedical engineering. While working at Air Products and Chemicals in Allentown, PA, Vin completed an MBA program at Lehigh University. After leaving Air Products, Vin’s career focused on healthcare and health outcomes research. In the early ‘80’s he held positions at DuPont Medical Systems and ICI (later Astra Zeneca), where he was a pioneer in health outcomes research. He concluded his career at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, supporting the launch of Prevnar (PCV7) by presenting the health economic case for its formulary inclusion to health organizations and government ministries worldwide.
Vin enjoyed boating, especially on the Elk River and C&D canal. He was an avid sports fan with a love for the Eagles and Bears, Red Sox and Phillies, and the Northwestern University Wildcat football and basketball teams. Vin was a dedicated lifelong runner, participating in multiple local events, including the Caesar Rodney half marathon. His passion for track and field was passed on to his family; together they attended numerous local, regional, national, and world track events.
Vin is survived by his wife of 45 years, Christine Anne (née Cumbers) Ciuryla; his son, Marcus Ciuryla and wife Sarah; his daughters, Katherine Zick and husband Daniel, and Rachel Francoeur and husband Dennis; and five granddaughters, Sage, Skyler, and Sloane Ciuryla, and Avery and Claire Zick.
A memorial service is being planned for spring. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Vin’s memory to the Penn Medicine Abramson Cancer Center, Head and Neck Cancer Program (giving.apps.upenn.edu) or Christiana Care Cecil County (uhcc.com).
