Susan B. Larsen

Susan B. Larsen, age 85, of Wilmington, DE (formerly of Bethesda, MD) passed away at home on February 22, 2023. She was born in Brooklyn, NY to Frederick and Eleanor (Christophersen) Bernhard.

She was predeceased by her father, her mother, her husband Bill, her older sister Eleanor, her son Eric, and grandson Matthew. She is survived by her daughters Cathy Cummings (Bob) of Sewickley, PA and Elisabeth Clarke (David) of Wilmington, DE. She is survived by five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Sue graduated second in her class from Chatham (NJ) High School. She then attended the University of Delaware where she majored in elementary education and met her husband Bill. Upon graduating, Sue began her teaching career in Claymont, DE. Much of her teaching career was spent at Westbrook Elementary School after she and Bill relocated to Bethesda, MD. Sue loved teaching and especially enjoyed teaching math. She always said that she learned as much from her students about math as she taught them. Several years after retiring from teaching, Sue and Bill moved back to Delaware.

Sue and Bill loved antiquing, spending time in NH, and exploring Cathedrals in England. After returning to Delaware, Sue became a member of Christ Church Christiana Hundred. She loved going to church, making many great friends there, and enjoying all that the church had to offer. Sue had a passion for antiquing until the end. She had an uncanny ability to spot a deal from across the room. She also loved gardening, birds, and seeing “critters” in nature, particularly foxes. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. She will be missed by many people.

These are the things that will forever remind me of Sue: casual flower arrangements that brighten a room, cyclamen in bloom, prints of grazing sheep, fox figures, and car rides in the mountains. I learned so much from her & Bill about how to live well and enjoy simple things. She will be missed.

My deepest condolences. Sue was a very dear friend. I have great memories of her navigating with her maps on our various day road trips. attending planned events and walking excursions at Longwood Gardens as well as many dining opportunities. I loved visiting at Sue’s house with her many antiques and eclectic treasures throughout. She deeply loved her home family and was very devoted to them as well as her friends. She will be greatly missed.
