Olympia Ganoudis

Olympia Ganoudis passed away peacefully on March 16, 2022. She was 93 years old. Olympia was born in Philadelphia to the late George and Georgia Tridemas. She graduated from P.S. DuPont High School in 1947 and kept up with class reunions throughout her life. She believed in showing up for life events, no matter how big or small.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Nicholas Ganoudis, who passed away in 1981 at the age of 57. In Nicholas, she found everything she valued in life: beauty, kindness and laughter. True to her character, she survived that loss, evolved and thrived. Olympia was also preceded in death by her brother Nicholas Tridemas. She spent many holidays with him and his children, whom she adored.

Olympia’s career spanned seven decades in the fashion industry, where she worked as a seller, buyer and stylist. Her involvement ranged from children’s clothing (Arthur’s), to women’s wear (Bird-Speakman), to haute couture (Frances Boutique), and to the Fashion shop where she worked for many years. Olympia was known for her impeccable taste. She loved talking to customers and selecting the best styles for each. Olympia’s professional legacy will be carried on by her daughter Olga who is a jewelry designer.

Olympia never stopped creating. She loved to sew and was obsessed with the beauty of fabric. She painted, did needlework, quilting and decoupage. She cooked and baked and was renowned for her spanakopita.

Olympia sought out the joy of being with others everyday of her life. She believed in the power of forgiveness and said, “You never know what someone is going through.”

Most of all, Olympia loved being a mother to her three children. She and her husband Nicholas were so proud of them and loved them more than anything. She was blessed with a granddaughter, Zoe, who was the light of her life.

Olympia is survived by her sons Gus (Elin Raymond) and Nicholas (Pavel Butorin), daughter Olga (Billy Papili), sister Linda Edmonds-Faraci (Gary Faraci) and her granddaughter, Zoe Ganoudis.

A celebration of Olympia’s life will be held at Christ Church, Christiana Hundred, 505 E. Buck Road, Greenville, Delaware 19807, on Wednesday March 23, 2022 at 1:00pm. Interment will be private.

    Sheila Grant writes,
Olga and Family: My husband and I lived next door to Olympia in the Hamilton House for the past few years. In that short time, we found her to be a gracious, lovely lady. I'd like to share with you a few stories that make me smile when I think of her. -One evening within the first week of moving in, I stepped out into the hall in my pajamas for a moment and got locked out. My cat was with me, and my husband (who is hard of hearing) was inside watching TV. I knocked and called for him to let me in, but he could not hear me. I knocked and called louder and louder, but he still did not hear me. I did not have my cell phone with me, and I did not know his cell # by heart. By this time it was after 9:30, and Olympia opened her door (also in her pajamas) and said "What's wrong?" I'm sure she thought--"These new neighbors are certainly loud!". Instead of telling me to "keep it down", she listened to my explanation and graciously invited me (and my cat) into her apartment. We sat down, and she started to offer some ideas. Eventually, we figured out a solution together. We used her laptop to access my contacts list and then used her cell phone to call my husband. I was amazed and grateful that she took on the problem of a stranger and helped me out of a jam. -Another time, I wanted to paint our front door, but could not decide on a color. Inspired by the beautiful painting Olympia had hanging in the hall (her own piece), I was considering several colors that would complement hers. I left her a note with 3 paint swatches and asked for her thoughts. The next day I found a lovely card from her. She started by saying "I like all three", which felt like a very sweet way to not impose her opinion (so gracious!). Then she taped each swatch onto the card, in order of her recommendation. We ended up going with her first choice, and she was right--It looks great! -Finally, about a year ago, I had major surgery. The day I arrived home from the hospital, just before dinner time, she knocked on our door and brought us dinner--Homemade soup, chicken breasts, fresh-baked cookies, and a beautiful orchid in a vase! I was bowled over by the thoughtfulness and generosity of this 92-year old, who went out of her way to reach out to me at a tough time! So, even though we did not know Olympia for very long, we always enjoyed our conversations and her lively personality. I can attest that she remained generous, thoughtful, gracious, and fun until the end. She inspired me to be a better neighbor and friend! Sheila Grant Hamilton House

I was lucky to have Olympia as a neighbor and friend for the past 17 years. She was so sweet and kind. I sent her a birthday card when she turned 90. It read: “I hope to grow up to be exactly like you! So stylish and youthful!”We had many lunch dates, movies and trips. At one time or another I met each of her children and always heard about each of them and Zoe. My heart goes out to each of you. Olympia was one of a kind.❤️
