Natalie Margaret “Peggy” (Riegel) Weymouth, 83, of Montchanin, DE died peacefully at home on December 16th, 2025 surrounded by her three children.
Born in 1942 in Philadelphia, PA, she was raised in Montchanin, DE and continued to live down the hill from her parents’ former house until she died. She attended Tower Hill School and The Tatnall School and ultimately graduated from Oldfields School. Upon returning to the Wilmington area, she worked in a variety of roles at the Alfred I. duPont Institute, Majorie Speakman and Wilmington Country Store. Following her passion, she founded and built her own retail store Creative Critters into one of the pre-eminent needlepoint shops on the Eastern Seaboard – a talented artist, she painted and designed canvases that clients craved. Peggy created works which can be found in wardrobes and rooms across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast including the prayer kneelers in the sanctuaries at Christ Church Cristiana Hundred in Wilmington, DE and St. John’s Church in Fishers Island, NY.
Peggy had a passion for the flora, fauna and history of the places where she lived and visited, but was particularly enamored with the Brandywine River Valley. She was an active board member, committee member and/or volunteer at Longwood Gardens, Winterthur Museum & Gardens and Hagley Museum & Library, where she was a member of the Eleutherian Mills Residence Committee, and she was a former President of the Garden Club of Wilmington. Her philanthropy extended to those institutions as well as The Brandywine Conservancy to which she was an early and frequent donor. She was a gifted watercolor artist, painting in Wilmington, DE and Spring Island, SC, and her botanicals depicting local flowers and plants were displayed at The Philadelphia Flower Show and were often auctioned to benefit local charities.
She loved being outdoors. An avid sportswoman, she played tennis, paddle tennis and golf actively at Vicmead Hunt Club, Bidermann Golf Club, Fishers Island Club, Hay Harbor Club, Mill Reef Club, Spring Island Club and Chechessee Creek Club. In addition, Peggy was an excellent shot with quail and dove and a terrific fly-fisher for Atlantic salmon and trout – often putting her competitive husband to shame with her gracious talent.
Mrs. Weymouth is pre-deceased by her father Richard Eveland Riegel; her mother Edith (du Pont) Riegel; sister Edith (Riegel) Miller; brothers Richard Eveland Riegel, Jr. and John Ely Riegel; and her husband of 62 years Philip Blackburn Weymouth, Jr. She is survived by her son Philip Blackburn Weymouth III and his wife Elizabeth Katherine (Kirk) Weymouth and their three sons, Philip Riegel Weymouth, Henry Carter Weymouth and James Blackburn Weymouth; her daughter Natalie Machold (Weymouth) Keenan and her husband Benjamin Wilson Keenan and their two daughters, Lucinda Weymouth Keenan and Natalie Halliday Keenan; her son Timothy Bell Weymouth and his wife Dr. Katharine Weston (Lopez) Weymouth and their two children John MacLaren Weymouth and Margaret Eveland Weymouth; her sister Esther Driver (Riegel) Wright and her husband David Wright; and her brother-in-law Charles Machold Weymouth.
The Weymouth Family also would like to recognize and thank the extraordinary group of caregivers who supported Peggy over the last years of her life.
A celebration of Peggy’s life will take place at a date to be determined in 2026 following a private interment. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hagley Museum & Library specifically for the Eleutherian Mills Residence, P.O. Box 3630, Wilmington, DE 19807 or Brandywine Conservancy, 1 Hoffman’s Mill Road, P.O. Box 141, Chadds Ford, PA 19317.
