Michael T. Carroll, age 79, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 22, 2022.
Born in 1943 to Emmett (“Cap”) and Margaret (“Peg”) Carroll in Irondequoit, New York, Mike attended Fairfield University where he graduated at the top of his business school cohort. He married Shirley Knapp in 1968, and together they raised two children, Michelle and Sean.
A proud 51 year “DuPont-er” (1964-2015), Mike worked in various leadership and executive roles with the company. His career began with assignments in manufacturing films in Rochester, New York and Towanda, Pennsylvania. In 1980, he transferred to human resources in Wilmington, Delaware. His anticipated brief stay in Delaware became permanent. He retired just before the start of the new millennium and immediately returned to work as a DuPont Safety consultant. After 15 years as a consultant, Mike retired to commit full time to his role as doting grandfather.
A lifelong supporter of law enforcement and emergency services, in his younger years, Mike volunteered as both an emergency medical technician and firefighter. An avid carpenter and handyman, he helped both his children renovate their first homes. Later in life, Mike found great joy gathering family and friends at his home on the North East River. He volunteered with the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and enjoyed boating and watching the local fireworks.
Mike was a devout member of the Catholic Church. For years, he served as an usher at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, and he took great pride in sending his children and grandchildren to Catholic schools. He and his late wife Shirley gave generously to the Catholic charities at home and far away.
Mike is predeceased by his parents and his wife. He is survived by his children, Michelle Lugg (Sean Lugg) and Sean Carroll (Angelina Hidalgo); three granddaughters Emily, Bridget, and Violet, and brother Thomas Carroll of Atlanta, Georgia.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 3, 2022 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 4701 Weldin Road, Wilmington, Delaware, where friends and family may visit from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Interment will be in Rochester, New York on September 24, 2022.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mike’s memory to the Delaware Humane Association, 701 A Street, Wilmington, Delaware 19801 or Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 4701 Weldin Road, Wilmington, Delaware 19803.
