Marjory “Bodgie” Fair Read

Marjory Fair Read, known to absolutely everyone as “Bodgie”, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2021 in Hockessin, Delaware. Bodgie was born in Washington D.C., and grew up in Middleburgh, VA, Merion, PA and Aiken, SC, the daughter of Josefa Hofmann Fair and Col. Howard Cleugh Fair and granddaughter of the world-famous pianist Josef Casmir Hofmann. Bodgie grew up with her sister, Loulie, riding horses in Aiken and she never stopped this life-long equine passion. After finishing at The Aiken Day School and St. Timothy’s School, she attended Bryn Mawr College and graduated in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and worked as a Toxicologist at DuPont’s Haskell Laboratory. She married her Haverford College beau Robert Read in 1955 and together they raised their two children, Katherine and Howard, in their historic stone farmhouse in Newark, Delaware.

Bodgie shared her time, knowledge and life-long passion for horses with everyone around her and did so selflessly and tirelessly. As a riding teacher and Director of Riding at Sanford School for more than 10 years in the 1970’s and 1980’s, she introduced legions of young riders to the sport. After helping start the Sunny Hills Pony Club, she went on to volunteer for 41 years with the DelMarVa Region until she “retired” in 2020 with the distinct honor of having been the longest continuously serving Regional Supervisor in the history of the U.S Pony Club.

Bodgie’s contributions to the equine sport and its people did not end with Sanford or Pony Club. For more than 20 years she volunteered with the Freedom Hills Therapeutic Riding Program, helping people find their strengths through horsemanship. And in the 1980’s, she was invited to set up dressage for the nascent Fair Hill Equestrian Events and she continued to volunteer with the Fair Hill International (FHI) organization for more than 30 years where she first served as Dressage Scheduler and Organizer for the three-day eventing sport. Not held back by her arthritic artificial knees, summer thunderstorms, windswept hills, or continuously muddy cars, she went on to work in the vet box, as course flagger, as precision sign maker, and for many years the Volunteer Coordinator for all of the Fair Hill International events. Her love of the sport and of the people was clear in the thousands of volunteers and competitors and their families –from toddlers to Olympians — with whom she developed a lasting kinship. Just recently, she said “All of those relationships made working those long hours at Fair Hill, in all kinds of weather, absolutely worthwhile.”

Bodgie was predeceased by her loving husband of 45 years, Dr. Robert E. Read and her sister Louise “Loulie” Fair Fox, of Santa Fe, NM. Bodgie is survived by her brother M. Skip Hofmann (Elaine) of Elkton, Maryland, her children Katherine Stafford (Frank) of Newark, Delaware, Dr. Howard Read (Julie) of Morgan Hill, California, 3 grandchildren Erika Smith Strasser (Rick), Robert Stafford and Claudia Read, and one great-grandchild Vera Strasser.

A private celebration of Bodgie’s life will be held on Sunday August 29, 2021. Due to the family’s concern for everyone’s health and safety during this global pandemic, attendance will be limited and by invitation only.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: the U.S. Pony Club in honor of Bodgie Read, Faithful Friends or an animal-welfare charity of your choice.

Bodgie was not only a mentor but she was also my friend. She was the light of my life when volunteering at events and I looked forward to being greeted by her smiling face or a text message from her when I was volunteering. I loved volunteering with her by my side and always looked for her whenever we were out and about. I missed seeing her smiling face this past year because of covid and wish I could have seen her one more time. Bodgie I will always love you my friend and your well wishes for madeline as she galloped around fairhill. Your memory will live forever in all of our hearts.

It was nearly impossible to say "no" when Bodgie would call asking if I could volunteer. I aspire to her level of expected excellence and her patient good humor when plans went awry. We're all better for having known her. Condolences to Katherine, Frank, and family, and to the countless number of people for whom she was a unique treasure.

I first met Bodgie while I was a member of St. Augustine Pony Club. Bodgie was an incredibly kind and caring person, she made it a point to know everyone, and she had a way of making all of us feel special. One of my fondest memories of Bodgie is when she helped me get to Pony Club Championships in VA. It was so last minute I had to bring my qualifications to her house during her birthday party, and she was so happy to be able to help, not a bit upset about me interrupting her party. Like many others, Bodgie got me hooked on volunteering at Fair Hill. I love the volunteer family there, but, I would be lying if I said that anyone meant as much to me as Bodgie did. Last year with everything shut down I was so sad to not get to see her out and about (but grateful she was being safe). This year (2021), I've volunteered at a few trials and I was very hopeful I would be able to see her at one of them, and so disappointed when I didn't. I think every time I go to Fair Hill my eyes will be peeled to catch a glimpse of her shuffling through the crowds to get a job done, or for her white Subaru that was always filled to the brim. It's a habit I may never break. Bodgie, Pony club, and Fair Hill just go together, and what a beautiful way to remember a truly wonderful person. My thoughts are with her immediate family, as well as her extended network of friends and family that have all been blessed to have known Bodgie.

I can't really say more than everyone else already has. If there has ever been a measure of Bodgie's far reaching impact, it is this, she remembered my husband. It's no surprise she remembered me (from 30 years ago in Pony Club) or my Mom (also 30 years ago Pony Club) or even my daughter from more recent involvment with Freedom Hills and volunteering at FHI. She knew EVERYONE. Even my husband. He jump judged a couple times at fair hill. That secret volunteer database? It was all Bodgie. She remembered everyone and made everyone feel special. God speed, Bodgie. May you ride forever.

Dear Katherine & family, May Peace and Grace be with you. What a lovely generous, positive soul. From Sanford in the late 70’s to a Pony Club celebration for a new “A” a few years ago, Bodgie’s smile and warmth and work ethic was welcoming and contagious. We had a lovely chat with her and my Mom, in her 90’s. I was amazed she remembered us. What an ambassador for horse folk! Prayers ascend to you Bodgie, what an excellent ride and example you gave! Grace Happens! Love to you and your family, James Wood (still riding and driving) and Family, Indiantown Farm, Centreville, MD

I can't imagine how the Fair Hill family is feeling with the loss of Bodgie. She was an institution in herself and while I now live 900 miles away I am going to pretend she is still at Fair Hill working away. In my mind she went double clear on all her rounds. Great round and godspeed Bodgie you left some very large shoes to fill!! My thoughts to all her family and the extended family at FHI!

I will always remember Bodgie as a bundle of energy with purpose! She was always on the go. She was the most supportive person in so many peoples lives, rather it was a riding student or a friend's daughter who needed a second mother. She will be missed by so many, many people. I want to share my condolences and sympathy with Katherine, Howard and all of her family.

Sending my heartfelt condolences. I will always cherish the summer I came to Delaware to learn to ride and gain knowledge of horsemanship. Bodgie was a phenomenal instructor! I loved spending time with the Read family that summer and learning to ride at camp on “Miles To Go”. Always great to see Bodgie at family Thanksgiving get togethers. She introduced us to pony club, which was invaluable. She will be greatly missed!

My sincere condolences to the family. Bodgie was an amazing person. I owe my lifelong passion for horses to her incredible talent and teaching. To this day I practice all the horsemanship I was taught in Pony Club. I'm sure because of her I know more horsemanship than most people and can still recall Know-Down questions! Bodgie will be so missed, her legacy lives within the students who were lucky enough to know and love her. She was the true meaning of grace and grit! With love.....

Bodgie leaves a legacy for everyone who knew her, bringing joy, fulfillment, happiness and love to everyone whose life she touched. Kind and gracious to the core, by her example, she motivated and inspired others to become engaged. The combination of her love for children and her love of horses, was the magic of Bodgie Read! Bodgie was one of the most giving people I have ever met. I think she started volunteering for Freedom Hills Therapeutic Riding Program in the early to mid 1980’s. First she volunteered as a head walker for the horses and ponies helping to guide therapeutic riding students through their lessons. Then she became one of our best fundraisers. From late 1980s until 2021 she never missed the Freedom Hills Annual Gala. She would start months in advance collecting auction items. Two days before the auction she would set up the silent auction and run it through the close of the auction. Once we started having the Freedom Cup fundraiser she jumped right in to help with that one. Bodgie was a HUGE help to Freedom Hills TRP. Her help to Pony Club was unending. I will never forget one year one Ellie, my daughter, qualified for Pony Club Nationals, Bodgie said “She’s not going with that purple hair is she😂😂🤣🤣Personally I thought it was cute but because Bodgie didn’t agree Ellie’s hair was back to blond for Nationals. We all have so many wonderful stories. Bodgie, you will surely be missed 🥲💕❤️

Bodgie was such an inspiration and will remain a permanent fixture in my childhood memories of competing both at Fair Hill and with USPC. I can still remember her warm greetings at each rally being able to just - momentarily erase all of our nerves. Both times that I competed at USPC nationals for Delmarva she was like a beacon of home amongst the chaos of being at such a large event, "Just go find Miss Bodgie" was a common response to ANY question. I can only hope to inspire, and help as many young athletes as she did throughout her extensive volunteer hours. I know that she leaves a huge wake behind her and will be sorely missed.

Bodgie was a face I knew so well from pony club into adulthood, and having my own business. She lived for fair hill and for pony club. It was a joy to be able to share my farm with her when she stopped in for a tour when I moved back home in 2015. She loved when I would bring her fresh eggs from my chickens to Xc schoolings! And I have a wonderful photo after finishing Fair Hill Long in 2019 with Bodgie smiling by my side. She was always proud of her pony clubbers! We will all miss you Bodgie- RIP and thank you for everything you did for pony club and fair hill

    Cathy McCarthy writes,
As a child who could not afford a pony in the 1980s Bodgie made me feel so welcome at Sanford and sheparded me into Sunny Hills PC with determination. If a rally or rating was coming up, an appropriate horse to ride was scrounged up. Bodgie was so encouraging and kind that it is no wonder she ended up with a pack of barn rats like me who thought she was their second mom. I also agree with the earlier comment about the packed Subaru. It was a little like Mary Poppins' hand bag - I once saw an entire extra dressage arena appear out of the back of it when several chains were unexpectedly broken. Thank you to Bodgie Read for fostering a life long love of riding in so many people. You spread a lot of joy to so many people.

Katherine, Frank, Erica, Robert and family: We were so honored to be part of your family at holidays and celebrations. Bodgie's smile and delight in people brightened every occasion and her interest in each of us was so very sincere. She was passionate about horses and sharing that passion with others. But, most of all, she loved you and being a part of your lives. It must be a true comfort to know how many lives she touched and how many people share your loss. Shirley and Priscilla

Bodgie was my first riding instructor and such an amazing influence in my life. She always had a kind word, a quick smile, and a witty response. She was such a lovely person and I remember her so clearly even though it has been decades since I last saw her. She left an indelible mark on my life, and I became a riding instructor partly because I wanted to be just like her. She was truly one of a kind. I can only wish that I am half the person to my students that she was to me.

I’ve known Bodgie since I was 5, and her daughter, Katherine, has been my best friend for life. I started out calling her Mrs. Read, but was later encouraged to call her Aunt Bodgie. She watched my sister and I after school when my mother worked. She took us on so many outings with Katherine, and we had many adventures that we would have never had otherwise. I always wished she was my mother. Her example taught me what a real mother should be like, and having her as a role model helped me to be a better mother to my children. She was a very good friend to my parents. She helped me get through my dad‘s passing. She remained a good friend to my mom and was always doing things for her, even though my mother gave very little in return. I was grateful to get to spend so much time with her this year. It was such a joy talking to her as an adult. We did a lot of reminiscing, and I learned more about her life before I knew her. I’m so glad her mind was clear to the end. I miss her, and was thankful to have her in my life!
